Chương 8 - Blood in the Water

The Gold Coast Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of crystal, black silk, and polished brass.
More than four hundred guests—Pentagon liaisons, United States senators, tech billionaires, and the entire board of directors of Vance Aerospace—mingled beneath the towering chandeliers, sipping vintage champagne while a string quartet played Vivaldi from the balcony.
I stood near the grand stage, dressed in a custom tuxedo, holding a glass of sparkling water. To anyone watching, I was David Vance: billionaire founder, confident defense titan, unbothered by the quiet rumors that had begun circulating through the city about a domestic dispute at my Astor Street home.
Only Marcus Kane, standing twenty feet away disguised as an assistant hotel manager with an earpiece tucked beneath his collar, knew that beneath my tailored shirt rested a Kevlar trauma vest.
"Perimeter check, Marcus," I whispered into the tiny lapel microphone pinned to my carnation.
*"Exterior doors are locked down,"* Marcus’s voice hummed in my ear. *"Detective Chen has six undercover tactical units stationed in the service kitchens and the mezzanine. If Julian or Vanessa steps within fifty yards of this ballroom, we’ll have them boxed."*
"Keep your eyes on the service elevators," I murmured. "Julian wouldn't come through the front door."
Suddenly, the lights throughout the grand ballroom flickered once, twice, and died.
A collective murmur of confusion swept through the four hundred guests. The string quartet stopped playing in mid-measure. For three seconds, the room was plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the faint glow of cell phone screens and exit signs.
Then, the massive projection screen behind the main podium hummed to life.
A high-definition image flared across the twenty-foot display. It wasn't the promotional reel for Vance Aerospace’s new orbital satellite array.
It was the black-and-white police mugshot of Richard Miller from 1998, followed by a high-resolution scan of my father’s confidential *ICARUS TERMINATION REPORT.*
The ballroom exploded into frantic whispers.
"Ladies and gentlemen," a smooth, amplified voice echoed through the house sound system.
The spotlight on the secondary balcony snapped on, bathing two figures in harsh white light.
Julian Miller stood at the railing, wearing a pristine midnight-blue tuxedo, looking completely unbothered by the federal warrant out for his arrest. Standing beside him was Vanessa, draped in an emerald silk evening gown, her neck adorned with the very diamond necklace she had claimed Teresa stole from her bedroom.
"Forgive the interruption to your expensive evening," Julian spoke into a wireless microphone, his voice rolling through the hall with theatrical majesty. "My name is Julian Miller. And the man you are honoring tonight—David Vance—is the heir to a criminal syndicate built on murder, intellectual theft, and corporate treason."
Gasps erupted from the crowd. Several board members pushed their chairs back, staring between the stage and the balcony in sheer disbelief.
"Thirty years ago," Julian continued, his eyes blazing with manic triumph, "Victor Vance shot my father in cold blood in a Boston hotel room to steal the patents for Project Icarus—the very foundation of Vance Aerospace! And tonight, David Vance attempted to silence my sister, Vanessa, by having her beaten and framed when she discovered the proof!"
Vanessa stepped forward, dabbing at her eyes with a lace handkerchief, playing the battered, tragic heroine to perfection for the sea of cameras.
"David," Julian sneered down from the balcony, pointing directly at me. "Your father stole my family’s future. He left forty million dollars in a Swiss account as blood money to soothe his pathetic conscience. But money isn't enough. Tonight, the world sees you for what you really are."
I didn't run. I didn't hide behind my security team.
I walked slowly, deliberately, up the steps of the main stage, stepped behind the podium, and pulled the master microphone toward me.
The feedback hummed through the speakers, cutting off the panic in the room.
"You're right about one thing, Julian," I said, my voice ringing clear, calm, and resonant across the ballroom. "My father did kill your father."
A dead, suffocating silence fell over the four hundred people in the hall.
Julian’s sneer faltered for a fraction of a second. He hadn't expected a confession. He had expected me to deny it, to scramble, to scream for security—to play the panicked defensive game his father had played thirty years ago.
"My father committed a horrific crime," I continued, looking directly up into Julian’s eyes. "He spent the rest of his life running from it. He lived in terror of the day the truth would come to light. But my father didn't leave that forty million dollars to soothe his conscience, Julian."
I tapped the screen of the podium terminal.
The display behind me changed instantly. The scanned police report vanished, replaced by a live banking ledger from Credit Suisse, verified with federal forensic audit stamps.
"My father left that trust fund to provide for you and your sister," I revealed, as four hundred people watched the transaction history scroll across the screen. "And for the last seven years, Julian, you haven't just been drawing living expenses from it. You’ve been using that money to finance human trafficking syndicates and illegal weapons cartels in Eastern Europe."
Julian’s face went rigid.
"Every dollar you took," I said, clicking to the next slide, "was tracked by the Department of Justice. My corporate counsel didn't discover your real identity yesterday, Julian. Vance Aerospace intelligence identified you eighteen months ago, the moment you put Vanessa on that plane to Manhattan."
Vanessa spun toward her brother, her eyes wide with shock. "Julian... what is he talking about?"
"Shut up!" Julian barked, lowering his microphone.
"You thought you were hunting me," I said, my voice cold as absolute zero. "You thought Vanessa was leading me into a trap. But every file she stole, every encrypted thumb drive she used, was feeding federal investigators the evidence they needed to dismantle your entire international network."
"He’s lying!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away from the balcony railing. "Julian, tell them he’s lying!"
"It's over, Julian," I said. "Look behind you."
The heavy double doors of the mezzanine burst open.
A tactical strike team from the FBI Hostage Rescue Unit swarmed the balcony, their carbines leveled directly at Julian’s chest.
"Federal agents! Drop the weapon! Get on the ground!"
Julian Miller didn't get on the ground.

With a wild, animalistic scream of pure rage, he reached beneath his tuxedo jacket and pulled a concealed subcompact pistol from his waistband.
