Chương 7 - Checkmate at the Gala

The recording continued to spin, the scratchy analog audio cutting through the sterile silence of the hospital room like an open blade.

*"I didn't steal Project Icarus, David,"* my father’s voice whispered from beyond the grave. *"Richard Miller didn't commit suicide because of bankruptcy. He tried to sell our atmospheric telemetry to a foreign syndicate. When I confronted him in Boston, there was a struggle. The gun went off. I panicked... and I used the company’s intelligence assets to make it look like he took his own life."*

Detective Chen stared at the recorder, her jaw slack.

*"I created the Helios fund to quietly support his widow and children from the shadows,"* the tape continued, Victor Vance’s voice breaking with genuine, agonizing guilt. *"I gave Julian an executive proxy so that when he came of age, he would be provided for without knowing the blood on the money. But hate is a poison that feeds in the dark. If Julian and Vanessa are at your throat, it is because they found the truth in my old journals. Do not let them destroy the company, David. But do not become the monster I was to protect it."*

The tape ended with a dry, hollow click.

I stood completely motionless, staring down at the vintage machine.

My entire life, my entire identity as an engineer and an executive, had been built on the myth of Victor Vance: the principled, self-made visionary who built an aerospace empire on grit and integrity.

It was all built on a covered-up homicide.

"David," Detective Chen said softly, her professional edge softening for the first time. "This recording... it’s thirty years old. The statute of limitations on the financial fraud is gone, but the evidentiary implications—"

"Julian knew this entire time," I interrupted, my mind racing at lightspeed. "He wasn't trying to take over Vance Aerospace just for the money. He wanted to force me to sign the company over to his family's name as an act of cosmic restitution. And Vanessa... she was the instrument of his vengeance."

"Where is Julian now?" Chen asked.

"He’s in federal custody at the Dirksen Building," I replied.

"No, he isn't," Marcus Kane said, bursting through the double doors of the room with his phone pressed to his ear. "David, we have a major breach. The federal transport van carrying Julian Miller was intercepted on the Kennedy Expressway ten minutes ago."

"What?" Chen shouted, reaching for her radio.

"An armored semi-truck rammed the escort vehicle," Marcus reported, his voice tight with adrenaline. "Two smoke grenades were deployed. Julian was pulled from the wreckage by four armed operatives in tactical gear. They vanished into the industrial corridors along the Chicago River."

"And Vanessa?" I asked, my blood running cold.

"Vanessa wasn't in that van," Marcus said grimly. "Her high-powered lawyer, Marcus Vance, managed to secure an emergency medical furlough from the booking judge based on claims of 'severe internal trauma' sustained during her arrest. She was discharged from the county clinic twenty minutes ago into a private limousine."

"They’re regrouping," I said.

"Where would they go, David?" Chen asked, already unholstering her weapon and signaling the tactical teams outside. "If they know the feds are onto the espionage charges, they have to run for the border or an international flight."

"They won't run," I said, remembering the pure, unadulterated venom in Vanessa's eyes. "They spent seventeen months engineering this. Tomorrow night is the annual Vance Aerospace Benefactors Gala at the Drake Hotel. Every major defense official, every board member, and the entire Midwest press corps will be in that ballroom."

"You think they’re going to hit the gala?"

"Julian doesn't want to just rob me," I said, looking down at my father’s tape. "He wants to publicly execute my father’s legacy in front of the entire world. He’s going to release the Icarus file on that stage."

"We cancel the gala," Chen asserted. "We shut down the hotel, set up a perimeter—"

"No," I countered, looking her dead in the eye. "If you cancel it, they scatter into the wind with forty million dollars of offshore blood money and spend the rest of their lives hunting Teresa and everyone I care about. We let the gala proceed."

"David, that’s insane," Marcus said. "You’d be walking into an ambush."

May you like

"No, Marcus," I said, picking up the tape and sliding it into my coat pocket. "They think I'm my father. They think I'll hide the truth to save the family stock. Tomorrow night, we’re going to let them play their final card—and then we’re going to burn the entire deck."
