Chương 5 - Baiting the Trap

The silence in the grand living room was so absolute you could hear the rain tapping against the high sash windows.

Julian didn't turn around immediately. He kept his eyes locked on mine, the glass of Scotch frozen halfway to his mouth. Only the sudden, violent tightening of the muscles along his jawline betrayed that he heard the rhythmic, heavy tread of tactical boots descending the marble stairs.

"Federal marshals, step away from the table!"

Special Agent Donald Harris led the breach, his badge gleaming over a dark tactical vest, followed by two armed agents with their weapons drawn at low-ready. Behind them stepped Marcus Kane, looking completely impassive.

Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical gasp and backed up against the mantelpiece, knocking over an antique porcelain vase that shattered across the hearth. "Julian! What is this? What did you do?"

"Quiet, Vanessa," Julian said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. He set his glass down on the ruined, ink-stained contract with steady fingers. He turned slowly, raising both hands to shoulder height with theatrical ease. "Agent Harris, I assume? You’re making an embarrassing jurisdictional error. This is a private civil negotiation between family members regarding prenuptial agreements."

"Extortion isn't a civil matter, Mr. Miller," Harris said, stepping into the center of the room. "Neither is the trafficking of classified aerospace guidance telemetry under Title 18 of the United States Code."

Julian let out a dry, dismissive snort. "Classified telemetry? What nonsense is this? My sister and I haven't touched a single classified file."

"Leo," I called out toward the library archway.

Leo Ramirez stepped through the doors carrying his diagnostic terminal. He turned the screen toward Julian.

"The IP address you used to establish your offshore command bridge in Zurich just tried to initiate a handshake with our honeypot server twenty minutes ago," Leo said calmly. "You used a cloned administrative token created during the extraction from David's home network. We traced the packet routing directly through a commercial VPN registered to your personal passport number, Julian."

Julian’s eyes flickered toward his sister for a fraction of a second. It was the first time I saw genuine, unvarnished fear in the man’s eyes.

"You told me the extraction was clean," Julian hissed at her through his teeth.

"It was clean!" Vanessa cried, tears of rage finally cutting through her makeup. "I took it while he was unconscious! I watched the green bar finish! He didn't know!"

"He knew three months before you even bought the flash drive," Leo countered. "You downloaded three terabytes of garbage data embedded with federal tracking beacons. The Department of Defense hasn't received your blackmail file, Julian. The FBI Cyber Division has."

Julian’s aristocratic facade cracked. He lowered his hands, took a step toward the front vestibule, but Agent Harris instantly closed the distance, planting the barrel of his sidearm three inches from Julian’s chest.

"Don't even twitch, Miller," Harris barked. "Hands on the mantelpiece. Both of you. Right now!"

Vanessa began to weep loudly—not out of remorse, but out of the sheer, suffocating humiliation of total defeat. The marshals moved in with mechanical efficiency, pinning Julian against the brick fireplace and snapping high-tensile steel cuffs over his wrists.

"David, please!" Vanessa sobbed as the second agent wrenched her arms behind her mink coat. "David, he forced me! Julian made me do this! He threatened my life! He told me he would kill my family if I didn't help him! You know I love you! You know everything we had was real!"

I stood three feet away from her, watching her contort her face into an expression of desperate, devoted innocence. It was the exact same face she had made six months ago when I gave her the engagement ring in Paris. The exact same face she had made while kissing my cheek before I left for Seattle.

"You held a lighter to a woman’s face, Vanessa," I said, my voice barely louder than a whisper. "Teresa cared for my mother while she was dying. You tied her to a stone pillar like an animal."

"She was going to ruin everything!" Vanessa shrieked, all pretense of love vanishing in an instant, her voice turning shrill and demonic. "We were five days away! Five days and I would have owned half of this city! You were nothing, David! A boring, workaholic engineer who didn't even know how to spend his own money! I deserved this company! I earned it!"

"Get them out of my sight," I told Agent Harris.

"With pleasure, Mr. Vance," Harris replied, nodding to his men.

They dragged Julian and Vanessa toward the foyer. Julian didn't scream like his sister; he kept his eyes pinned on me as they hauled him backward through the double doors.

"You think this is over, Vance?" Julian whispered, his lips pulling into a bloody, mocking smile. "You think I'm the top of this chain? Look into the trust accounts in Zurich, you self-righteous bastard. Look at whose signature funded the bond this morning. You have no idea what your father left behind."

The front door slammed shut behind them, cutting off his words.

The mansion plunged back into silence. Outside, the sirens blared to life, carving through the rain as the convoy sped away toward the Dirksen Federal Building.

I stood alone in the center of the living room, staring down at the ink-stained documents on the table.

*“Look at whose signature funded the bond this morning,”* Julian had said.

Marcus Kane walked up beside me, holstering his weapon. "We got them clean, David. Wire fraud, attempted extortion, theft of trade secrets, aggravated assault. They won't see daylight for twenty-five years."

"Marcus," I said, turning slowly toward him. "Who signed the wire transfer for Vanessa’s bail this morning?"

Marcus frowned, pulling out his secure tactical phone. "Our forensic accountant pulled the shell corporation’s registration an hour ago. It was an umbrella entity called Helios Capital."

"And who is the primary beneficiary of Helios Capital?"

Marcus scrolled down the screen, his brow furrowing deeper with every line he read. He suddenly stopped. He looked up from the screen, his face completely pale.

"David... that’s impossible."

"Who is it, Marcus?"

"The sole signatory on the Helios account," Marcus said, his voice dropping into stunned disbelief, "is Victor Vance. Your father."
