Chapter 3

Everett used his phone’s flashlight to guide his way down. The air grew colder, smelling of ozone and dry earth. At the bottom of the stairs was a reinforced steel door with a simple keypad.

He didn't have a code. He stared at the buttons, his mind racing. What would Jonathan use? His birthday? No, too simple. The date the company was founded? No.

He thought about the letter. “I fear that someone inside this family values control more than love.”

Everett tried the date of his own birth.

Green light. Beep.

The door hissed open.

The room inside was a high-tech vault. It wasn't filled with gold or cash. It was filled with filing cabinets and a single, heavy-duty server rack that hummed quietly, powered by an independent solar-battery system Jonathan must have installed during the house’s renovation decades ago.

Everett opened the top drawer of the nearest cabinet. It was labeled: CELESTE – ORIGINS.

As he flipped through the pages, the world he thought he knew began to dissolve.

There were private investigator reports dating back forty years. There were birth certificates, bank statements from offshore accounts, and—most shockingly—a series of legal documents from a law firm in Switzerland.

Everett pulled out a folder and began to read.

Celeste wasn't just a socialite who had married into money. She was a woman who had systematically erased her past. Her "aristocratic" family in Virginia didn't exist. She was the daughter of a disgraced accountant who had gone to prison for embezzlement. She had met Everett’s father, Richard Langford, while working as a high-stakes "escort" in London—a fact she had buried under layers of forged history.

But that wasn't the "insurance policy."

Everett moved to the server. A monitor sat on the desk. He woken it up. A single icon sat in the center of the screen: THE AUGUST AGREEMENT.

He clicked it. A video file began to play.

The video was dated ten years ago. His grandfather, Jonathan, sat in a chair, looking frail but sharp.

"Everett," the recording began. "If you are seeing this, I am dead, and Celeste has finally shown her true face. You likely think she is merely greedy. You are wrong. She is a predator. For years, she has been skimming from the family trust, but not for herself. She has been funding a secondary organization—a group of investors who seek to dismantle Langford Industries from the inside. She wants the company to fail so she can buy it back for pennies through a shell corporation."

Jonathan leaned closer to the camera.

"But there is a deeper secret, Everett. One I discovered too late. The car accident that killed your father... it wasn't an accident. Richard was going to divorce her. He was going to strip her of the Langford name. I have the brake line analysis from the wreckage. I have the payment she made to the mechanic. I kept it to protect the family name—a mistake I regret every day. Use this to finish it. Do not show her mercy. She has none."

Everett felt like he couldn't breathe. His father hadn't died of a rainy road and bad luck. He had been murdered by the woman who had spent the last two months trying to steal Everett's son.
