Chapter 16

The edge of the ravine was a jagged, treacherous drop-off, slick with a thick layer of black ice and hidden beneath a treacherous dusting of snow. Everett reached the ledge, his boots slipping dangerously close to the forty-foot plunge into the frozen creek below. He spun around, ducking behind a massive, frost-covered boulder just as the two mercenaries broke through the tree line.

They had realized they were being baited. Their tactical flashlights swept the area frantically, casting long, menacing shadows across the snow.

"He’s pinned against the gorge," the lead mercenary growled, raising his suppressed rifle and advancing cautiously. "Fan out. Check the rocks."

Everett gripped the handgun tightly, checking the safety. He had never fired a weapon at another human being, but the paralyzing fear was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, desperate necessity to protect his family. As the lead mercenary stepped within five feet of the boulder, Everett moved.

He didn't shoot. The sound of the gunshot, even a small caliber one, would instantly give away his exact position to Vance and any other reinforcements in the woods. Instead, Everett lunged out from behind the rock, grabbing the barrel of the mercenary’s rifle and violently jerking it upward.

The suppressed weapon discharged harmlessly into the night sky, a quiet thwip that was immediately swallowed by the howling wind. Everett threw a brutal, desperate punch, connecting squarely with the mercenary’s tactical helmet. The man staggered backward, slipping on a patch of black ice, but quickly recovered, drawing a heavy combat knife from his chest rig.

Everett dodged a lethal, sweeping slash, stepping backward toward the dangerous edge of the ravine. The second mercenary raised his rifle, aiming a laser sight directly at Everett’s chest.

Before the second man could pull the trigger, the ice beneath his heavy combat boots completely gave way. With a sudden, terrifying crack, a massive chunk of the frozen ledge collapsed. The second mercenary tumbled backward, screaming loudly as he plunged forty feet down into the dark, freezing waters of the creek.

The first mercenary stared in shock for a split second. Everett capitalized on the distraction instantly. He lunged forward, sweeping the man’s legs out from under him. The mercenary crashed onto the frozen ground, dropping his knife. Everett raised his handgun, pointing it directly at the man's face.

"Don't move a single muscle," Everett gasped, his lungs burning.

But a cold, familiar voice echoed from the trees behind him. "Drop the gun, Everett, or I will put a bullet straight through your spine."

Richard Vance stepped out of the shadows, aiming a heavy revolver directly at Everett’s back.
