Chapter 20

The descent of the FBI tactical helicopters completely shattered the terrifying isolation of the Maine wilderness. Heavily armed federal agents swarmed the clearing in a highly coordinated, overwhelming display of force. The cabin doors were thrown open, but instead of the lethal gunfire of mercenaries, they were met by men and women wearing thick tactical vests emblazoned with the bright yellow letters of the FBI.

Sloane immediately stepped forward, raising her hands to show she was unarmed, and quickly identified herself to the tactical commander. She pointed to Vance on the floor and the mercenary tied to the porch pillar.

"The primary target is Richard Vance. He is a key financier for an international criminal syndicate," Sloane stated loudly over the deafening roar of the helicopter rotors. "He has men in the surrounding woods, and they set fire to the safe house a few miles down the coast."

The agents moved with brutal efficiency, hauling a cursing, struggling Richard Vance to his feet and escorting him roughly toward one of the waiting helicopters.

Everett collapsed into one of the rusted metal chairs, pulling Maren and Bennett into his lap. A team of federal paramedics rushed into the cabin, wrapping the family in thick, thermal foil blankets and checking their vital signs. Bennett, who had been incredibly brave throughout the entire horrific ordeal, finally broke down, crying softly into his father’s shoulder.

"It's over, buddy," Everett murmured, rocking the boy gently, tears of immense relief finally spilling hot down his own freezing cheeks. "The bad men are gone. They can never, ever hurt us again."

An older man wearing a heavy black overcoat stepped into the cabin, flashing a gold badge. It was Director Miller, Sloane’s former mentor. He surveyed the chaotic scene, looking at the exhausted, battered family, and then turned his attention to Sloane.

"We secured the data transfer, Sloane," Director Miller said, his voice carrying a heavy, grave authority. "The financial ledgers implicate two sitting senators and three massive multinational energy corporations. This is the biggest domestic terrorism funding bust in American history. We are freezing billions of dollars in offshore assets as we speak."

"What happens to us now?" Everett asked, his voice hoarse and completely exhausted.

"You are the most important material witnesses in the country right now, Mr. Langford," Miller replied gently. "We are transporting you directly to a secure federal facility in Washington D.C. You are going to be under absolute, twenty-four-hour protection until the congressional hearings begin."

Everett looked at Maren, who gave him a tired, resolute nod. The immediate, physical nightmare of the Maine woods was officially over, but the monumental legal war to destroy Celeste Langford’s dark legacy had just truly begun.
