Chapter 31

Hannah's fingers danced across the Apex Key terminal.

"Bypassing internal encryption protocols," she narrated, her eyes locked on the scrolling data. "I'm routing the database through a dozen decentralized servers to prevent the NSA from putting a lid on it. Initiating mass file transfer now."

On the screen, a massive progress bar appeared. It wasn't deleting the darkness; it was broadcasting it to the world. Major news organizations, independent journalists, and international watchdogs were suddenly receiving terabytes of irrefutable, classified evidence.

"Ten percent," Hannah read aloud.

Thorne sat in the back seat, staring in absolute, paralyzed horror as his life's work—decades of meticulous control, blackmail, and shadow governance—was laid bare for the entire planet to see.

"You're dead," Thorne whispered, his voice completely hollow. "Both of you. Vale was right. You're completely reckless."

"We stopped playing by your rules two years ago," I replied coldly.

"Fifty percent," Hannah announced. The SUV merged onto the Massachusetts Turnpike, the glowing skyline of Boston finally appearing in the distance through the rain.

My phone began to vibrate wildly. News alerts were already triggering. Massive Data Leak Exposes Shadow Network. Senators Implicated in Corporate Blackmail Ring. The dam had completely broken.

"One hundred percent," Hannah said, hitting the enter key one final time with a satisfyingly aggressive tap. "Transfer complete. The database is in the wild. Northstar Meridian is officially public knowledge."

I looked out the window at the passing city lights. The war that my father had inadvertently started, the war that Vale had escalated, and the war that Thorne had tried to salvage, was finally, permanently over. They could no longer hide behind classified stamps and closed-door hearings.

Cole picked up his radio, switching to a secure federal frequency.

"Dispatch, this is Special Agent Cole. I need a heavily armed escort to Hale Systems headquarters, and a secure transport for a high-value detainee. Suspect's name is Elias Thorne. Tell the Director to turn on the news."

We drove the rest of the way in silence, but it wasn't the heavy, suffocating silence of fear. It was the quiet, profound peace of a storm finally breaking.
