Chapter 27

The connection crackled with heavy static, but my mother’s voice finally came through the speaker. She sounded incredibly calm, a stark contrast to the absolute terror radiating through my own chest.

"Evelyn, are you safe?" I asked, sheltering the phone from the rain.

"Miguel moved us into the basement reinforced safe room," my mother replied smoothly. "Rosa is currently handing out heavy flashlights like they are weapons. We are secure for now."

"They are going to breach the house, Mom. Thorne wants the Apex Key. If I don't hand it over, he's going to order them to attack."

"Do not give that monster the Key," my mother ordered instantly, her voice carrying the unyielding authority she had forged over decades of surviving Adrian Vale. "Your father built that to destroy the network. You finish the job."

"I can't let them hurt you," I said, my voice cracking.

"Listen to me," Evelyn said softly. "I spent my life locked in rooms out of fear. I refuse to let fear dictate our choices ever again. If you have the briefcase, you open it. Do you understand?"

"I don't have the cipher code, Mom. Celeste said Dad left it for me, but I don't know what it is."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line.

"He left it for you," Evelyn murmured thoughtfully. "Thomas always believed that the things that hurt us the most are the things we must use to heal. Think about the house. Think about the day it all started."

My mind raced. The day it all started. The day Adrian Vale had threatened our family, the day Northstar became a weapon.

"The feather duster," I whispered to myself. The secret compartment in the closet where my mother had hidden evidence for years.

"No," my mother corrected over the phone. "Before that. The photograph, sweetheart. The one hidden in the library. The date on the back."

The photograph of Thomas Hale and Arthur Price. The day they founded Hale Systems. The day the original sin was committed.

"October 14, 1988," I said aloud.

"101488," Hannah repeated, immediately kneeling in the mud and pulling the silver briefcase toward her. She rapidly punched the six digits into the digital lock.

A sharp, mechanical click echoed in the darkness.

The heavy latches sprang open.
