CHAPTER 14: THE LAST MAN INSIDE

I was questioned for eleven hours.
The document found beside the chief of staff’s body contained my digital signature.
Phone records showed several calls between my private number and the victim.
Security footage placed a car registered to Hale Systems outside the apartment building.
The evidence was precise.
Too precise.
Someone had used the same methods Daniel and Samuel had used before.
Create a complete false reality.
Fill it with enough truth that no one questions the lie.
I was not arrested, but I was ordered to remain in Washington.
News networks announced that I had become a person of interest.
Hale Systems shares collapsed.
Several government agencies suspended their contracts with the company.
Adrian Vale issued a public statement expressing sorrow for his chief of staff and calling for a fair investigation.
He never directly accused me.
He did not need to.
Hannah examined the digital signature.
“It was created using the biometric profile stolen during the Northstar operation,” she said.
“Samuel’s servers were seized.”
“Most of them.”
“What do you mean?”
“One server listed in the chapel inventory never reached federal storage.”
Agent Cole checked the transportation records.
The missing server had been removed from evidence by a senior Justice Department official.
The authorization appeared valid.
The official denied signing it.
The server had disappeared.
Someone inside the government was still working for Vale.
Rosa called from Boston.
She sounded frightened.
“Marcus, Evelyn is missing.”
My mother’s federal guards had received orders to transport her to a secure medical facility.
The orders were false.
By the time Rosa realized something was wrong, Evelyn had been taken.
A message arrived on my phone seconds later.
Arthur’s laboratory. Come alone. Bring the original film.
Vale was no longer protecting his reputation.
He was trying to destroy the evidence and every witness connected to it.
Agent Cole wanted to organize a rescue.
But Vale’s people had access to federal communications.
Any official operation could warn them.
We created a false plan instead.
Federal agencies announced that I had been detained for violating the terms of the investigation.
Television cameras recorded agents placing me inside a vehicle.
A different man wearing my coat left the federal building through a secure garage.
Meanwhile, Hannah, Rosa, and I traveled to Massachusetts using a private aircraft registered to another company.
We reached Arthur’s abandoned laboratory shortly after midnight.
The building had been searched during Samuel’s arrest, but investigators focused on the underground server room.
They had not examined the surrounding tunnels.
Rosa and I entered through the drainage route.
Hannah remained outside to control the security network.
My mother was tied to a chair inside the original workshop.
Adrian Vale stood beside her.
Two armed men guarded the door.
Vale had removed his jacket and tie.
Without the symbols of public office, he looked older.
Smaller.
But no less dangerous.
“You destroyed my family’s legacy,” he said.
“Your family built its legacy through extortion.”
“My father protected American technology from being controlled by unstable inventors.”
“You mean Arthur Price.”
“Arthur was brilliant. He was also impossible to manage.”
“So your father stole from him.”
“My father preserved the work.”
The language of powerful men rarely changed.
They renamed theft as protection.
They renamed threats as agreements.
They renamed victims as unstable.
“Release my mother.”
“Give me the film.”
I held up a small sealed envelope.
Vale gestured toward one of the armed men.
He took the envelope and opened it.
Inside was a copy.
Vale immediately recognized it.
“You think I’m an idiot?”
“No. I think you’re predictable.”
The workshop lights went out.
Hannah had entered the security network.
Rosa moved through the darkness toward my mother.
One of the guards fired blindly.
The shot shattered a window.
I struck the second guard with a metal stool.
Vale grabbed Evelyn and pressed a handgun against her neck.
Emergency lights turned on.
Rosa stood behind him.
She held the wooden handle of an old cleaning brush.
For one second, the scene resembled the kitchen where everything had begun.
But Rosa did not swing.
She calmly pressed the fire alarm.
Foam exploded from the ceiling.
Vale lost his grip on my mother.
I pulled Evelyn away as Rosa kicked the gun across the floor.
Agent Cole and federal officers entered through the rear doors.
The two guards surrendered.
Vale reached inside his coat.
Cole aimed his weapon.
“Do not move.”
Vale slowly withdrew a small electronic device.
His thumb hovered over a button.
“If I press this,” he said, “every record connected to Northstar is released with Marcus Hale’s signature.”
Hannah’s voice came through the workshop speakers.
“No, Senator.”
Vale looked toward the ceiling.
Hannah continued.
“The device connected to our network three minutes ago. We copied everything.”
Vale stared at the device.
For the first time, he understood that his own system had become evidence.
It contained payments.
Instructions.
Names of government officials.
The order to contaminate my mother’s medication.
The plan to frame me for the chief of staff’s death.
And a recorded command ordering that chief of staff silenced after he threatened to cooperate.
Vale dropped the device.

His political career ended before the officers placed him in handcuffs.
But the arrests were only beginning.
