Chapter 7 - The Subterranean Vault|

The subterranean vault beneath the Aurelia Grand was built like a military bunker. Reinforced steel doors, biometric scanners, and thick concrete walls kept the private fortunes of New York’s elite safe from the outside world.

Ava walked beside Niko as the heavy vault door swung open with a deep, mechanical groan.

The vault manager, an elderly man in a formal suit, bowed respectfully as Niko approached. “Mr. Moretti. Box 408, as requested.”

The manager led them down a narrow aisle lined with gold and silver safety deposit boxes. He stopped in front of a small, heavy steel door marked 408.

He inserted his master key into the left lock, then stepped back. “Whenever you are ready, Miss Monroe.”

Ava’s hand trembled as she reached out. She held the small gold key with the black rose bow, inserting it into the right lock.

It turned smoothly, a satisfying click echoing in the quiet vault.

Ava pulled the steel drawer out. Inside lay a single, thick manila envelope sealed with red wax.

Niko stood close behind her, his presence a steady, solid anchor as she broke the wax seal with her thumb.

Ava pulled out a stack of yellowed documents, bank ledger copies, and a small USB flash drive. Attached to the front of the pages was a hand-written letter in her mother’s familiar, elegant script:

My darling Ava,

If you are reading this, I am no longer there to protect you. Richard and Victoria think I am blind to what they have done. They have been diverting funds from the Monroe Design House into offshore accounts under Victoria’s maiden name.

The drive attached contains the original copyright registrations for every design I created, along with proof that Victoria Whitmore never held a single legal patent.

Do not let them steal your future, my sweet girl. Fight for what is ours.

Love always, Mama.

Ava clutched the letter against her chest, silent tears streaming down her cheeks.

Ten years of manipulation, ten years of feeling worthless and unwanted, washed away in a single moment of absolute, undeniable truth.

May you like

Niko reached past her shoulder, taking the USB drive from the envelope.

“This drive,” Niko said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register, “contains enough evidence to bankrupt the Whitmore Foundation by nightfall.”
