Chapter 20 - The Unlocked Door

|

A week later, the dust had finally settled. Bennett Luxury Group, under Norah’s brilliant leadership and Adrien’s financial backing, was restructuring and thriving. The Romanov threat was eradicated. The Bennett family was a cautionary tale whispered at dinner parties.

Norah was standing on the balcony of the master suite, watching the waves crash against the cliffs, when Adrien walked up behind her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.

“You did incredible work at the board meeting today,” Adrien murmured, kissing her neck. “You’re a natural queen.”

Norah leaned back into his solid chest. “I had a good king standing behind me.”

Adrien gently turned her around. The playful smirk was gone from his face, replaced by a nervous intensity she had never seen before. The most dangerous man in Chicago suddenly looked like a terrified boy.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee; he just opened it, revealing a stunning, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring.

“Norah,” Adrien said, his voice thick with emotion. “I loved you when you were a conservationist in a dusty apron. I love you now as the CEO of an empire. I will love you when we are old and gray. Marry me.”

Norah gasped, tears springing to her eyes. She reached out, nodding frantically. “Yes. Yes, Adrien, of course.”

He slipped the ring onto her finger, kissing her deeply, sealing a promise that had been forged in fire and blood.

But as they pulled apart, Adrien didn't smile. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a manila folder, identical to the one that had held her grandmother's banking documents.

“There is one more thing,” Adrien said, his voice dropping to a serious whisper. “Before we get married, there can be no secrets between us. Not even the buried ones.”

Norah frowned, taking the folder. “What is this?”

“When Marco dug into your grandmother’s vault,” Adrien explained slowly, “he found a second lockbox. One connected to my grandfather’s name.”

Norah opened the folder. Inside was a faded, black-and-white photograph from the 1960s. It showed Sofia Falcone, her grandmother, standing next to a young, handsome man who looked exactly like Adrien. They were holding hands.

“My grandfather didn't just do business with the Falcones, Norah,” Adrien said quietly, his eyes dark with the weight of decades of mafia history. “He was supposed to marry your grandmother. But something happened. A betrayal that started a fifty-year blood feud between our families. A feud your father tried to use to kill you.”

Norah stared at the photograph, her heart pounding. The key hadn't just unlocked her company. It had unlocked a ghost story.

“What really happened to them, Adrien?” Norah whispered, looking up at him.

Adrien looked out at the dark, churning ocean, the shadows of his violent world creeping back in.

“I don't know yet,” Adrien said softly. “But whoever killed my grandfather... I think they’re still alive. And they know you have the key.”
