Chapter 32 - The Cliffside ConfrontationThe wind howled like a wounded animal as Daniel Vance moved silently through the dense, rain-soaked pine forest overlooking the library.

He wasn't the polished CEO of Manhattan anymore. He was a man stripped down to his most primal instincts. The heavy steel tire iron in his hand felt like an extension of his own arm. He didn't have tactical training, but he had something much more dangerous: he had absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to protect.
Through the driving rain, Daniel spotted a faint, rhythmic glow near the edge of the jagged cliffs.
He crept closer, moving silently over the wet pine needles.
Standing near the precipice, overlooking the evacuated library below, was Silas Vance. He was dressed in black tactical gear, a heavy waterproof poncho whipping in the wind. In his right hand, he held a sleek, military-grade remote detonator. He was staring down at the library, a look of twisted, euphoric anticipation on his weathered, scarred face.
Daniel didn't shout. He didn't announce himself.
He charged out of the tree line like a freight train.
Silas heard the snapping branches a split second before Daniel hit him. Daniel swung the tire iron with catastrophic force, aiming for Silas’s hand. The heavy steel connected with a sickening crack.
Silas roared in pain, dropping the detonator as the bones in his wrist shattered.
Daniel tackled him, sending both men crashing into the freezing mud, inches from the edge of the three-hundred-foot cliff.
"You arrogant corporate piece of trash!" Silas snarled, kicking Daniel violently in the chest, knocking the air from his lungs. Silas rolled, pulling a serrated combat knife from a tactical sheath on his thigh. "I’m going to gut you, and then I’m going to manually trigger the sequence!"
Daniel scrambled backward in the mud, gasping for air. "You're pathetic, Silas. Julian and Arthur built an empire, and you're just a glorified demolition man throwing a tantrum in the woods."
The insult hit its mark. Silas lunged forward with blinding speed, slashing the knife in a brutal arc.
Daniel raised the tire iron, parrying the blade. Sparks flew as steel clashed against steel in the pouring rain. Silas was a trained killer; his movements were precise and lethal. He drove his knee into Daniel’s ribs, hearing a satisfying snap, and slashed the knife across Daniel’s left shoulder, slicing deep into the muscle.
Daniel yelled in pain, dropping to one knee. Blood mixed with the rain, soaking his jacket.
Silas stood over him, breathing heavily, a triumphant sneer on his face. He glanced over his shoulder. The detonator was lying in the mud, five feet away.
"Your billions can't buy you out of this one, Harrison," Silas spat, turning to grab the remote.
But Daniel wasn't finished.
As Silas reached for the detonator, Daniel ignored the agonizing pain in his shoulder. He lunged forward, grabbing Silas by the ankle and yanking with every ounce of strength he had left.
Silas lost his footing, crashing face-first into the mud.
Daniel crawled over him, wrapping his bleeding arm around Silas’s throat in a vicious chokehold. He didn't care about his own pain. He only saw the faces of Claire and Amy.
"This is my family's land," Daniel roared, tightening his grip as Silas thrashed wildly, slashing the knife backward and catching Daniel’s side. "You do not touch my family!"
Silas gagged, dropping the knife as his vision blurred. He flailed his uninjured hand, his fingers desperately grazing the plastic casing of the detonator in the mud.
With a final, desperate surge of adrenaline, Silas slammed his palm down onto the red trigger button.
Daniel froze, his heart stopping as he looked down at the library in the valley below, waiting for the devastating flash of fire and the roar of collapsing concrete.
One second passed. Then two. Then three.

Only the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the cliffs filled the silence.
The bomb didn't go off.
