Chapter 31 - The Architecture of SurvivalThe icy water in the culvert was rising rapidly as the storm surge battered the Oregon coast. The freezing tide slapped against Liam’s chest, threatening to drag him off the maintenance ledge.

He wiped the freezing water from his eyes, aiming the beam of his flashlight at the intricate web of wires wrapped around the C-4 explosive. There were three primary leads: red, blue, and a striped yellow wire that vanished into the concrete casing.
"Amy, I’m running out of time," Liam said into his radio, his voice echoing in the concrete chamber. "The digital timer on the receiver just dropped to two minutes. I need the bypass schematic."
Above ground, standing in the freezing rain behind a police barricade, Amy stared at the glowing screen of her tablet. Her fingers were numb, but her mind was operating with terrifying clarity. She was an architect’s wife. She had spent countless nights at the kitchen table reviewing these exact blueprints with Liam.
"Okay, I have it," Amy said, her breath pluming in the cold air. "Section 4B. The main grounding conduit for that pillar is routed through the obsolete municipal grid. It’s the striped yellow wire, Liam. But the blueprint shows a secondary loop."
"A secondary loop?" Liam swore under his breath. "Silas tapped into the building's own electrical grid to power the receiver. If I cut the yellow wire, the power drop might trigger the fail-safe."
"You can't cut it," Amy realized, her voice rising in panic. "You have to jump the circuit. You have to connect the red wire to the grounding conduit before you sever the receiver, so the bomb thinks it’s still receiving a charge."
"I don't have a jumper cable," Liam said, frantically searching his tool belt. "I just have the multi-tool."
"Liam, get out!" Amy begged, tears finally mixing with the rain on her face. "Please! Let the building fall. I don't care about the library! I care about you! Come back to me!"
Down in the dark, Liam leaned his forehead against the cold concrete of the pillar. He thought of his quiet life. He thought of the morning coffee, the smell of old books, and the sound of little Claire laughing in the tide pools. He thought of the new baby growing inside Amy.
They had built a sanctuary. A place where women and children felt safe. A place that stood as a monument to surviving abuse and corporate greed. If this building fell, Silas Vance won. The shadows won.
"I'm not letting them take our home, Amy," Liam whispered fiercely into the radio. "I can use the copper housing of my flashlight as a conductive bridge. It’s a risk, but it’s the only way."
"Liam, no!"
"I love you, Amy. Tell Claire I love her."
Liam dropped the radio. It splashed into the freezing water and sank.
He was entirely alone in the dark.
He unscrewed the heavy metal casing of his flashlight, dumping the batteries into the water. He was plunged into pitch blackness.
Working entirely by touch, his fingers numb and bleeding, Liam felt for the red wire. He stripped the rubber casing with his teeth, tasting copper and dirt. He did the same for the striped yellow wire.
He had less than sixty seconds. He could hear the faint, high-pitched whine of the receiver charging its capacitors.
He wedged the copper casing of the flashlight between the exposed wires, pressing them tightly against the metal to complete the circuit bridge. With his other hand, he gripped his multi-tool, sliding the wire cutters around the primary blue wire that fed the detonator.

If the bridge held, the bomb would stay asleep. If it failed, he would be vaporized.
He closed his eyes, saw Amy’s face in the dark, and squeezed the handles of the multi-tool.
