Chapter 8 - The Morning After

|

The sun rose over Ravenscliffe, casting a deceptive, golden light over the sprawling estate. To the outside world, it was just another morning for the Boston elite. Inside, a war was brewing.

Rafe didn't leave the secure suite. He sat at a small desk, analyzing the ledger, cross-referencing the offshore accounts with his own encrypted files on his laptop.

Nell watched him from the bed, sleep completely eluding her.

“We can't just take this to the police,” Rafe muttered, running a hand through his dark hair. “Harold Puit has half the district attorneys in this city in his pocket. Bruno will know before the ink is dry on the arrest warrant.”

“Then what do we do?” Nell asked.

“We cut the head off the snake in public,” Rafe stated coldly. “Bruno has called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow night. He plans to use the destruction of the southern warehouse as proof that I am unfit to lead the family business. He will call for a vote of no confidence.”

“He’s going to steal your company.”

“He is going to try,” Rafe corrected, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. “But he doesn't know I have the ledger. He doesn't know I have you.”

There was a sharp knock on the door.

“It’s Ezra,” a muffled voice called out.

Rafe unlocked the door. Ezra stepped inside, looking grim.

“Bruno just arrived at the estate,” Ezra reported. “He’s demanding to see you. He says he wants to discuss the 'tragedy' at the harbor.”

Rafe’s eyes narrowed. “Keep him in the drawing room. Do not offer him a drink.”

He turned back to Nell.

“Stay here. Do not make a sound.”

“Be careful,” Nell whispered instinctively.

Rafe paused at the doorway, looking back at her. The fierce, uncompromising mafia boss softened for a fraction of a second.

“Always,” he murmured, before disappearing into the hallway.
