Chapter 10 - The Hidden Threat

When Rafe returned to the secure suite, he found Nell pacing the length of the room. She turned sharply as he locked the door.
“He knows I’m a threat,” Nell said immediately. “If he mentioned me to you, it means Teddy recognizes that I saw them in the study.”
“You are not leaving this room,” Rafe commanded, walking to the desk and closing his laptop. “Bruno is overconfident. He believes he holds all the cards.”
“Rafe, you can't just keep me locked in here forever,” Nell argued. “I have to go back to work. If Mrs. Croll notices I’m missing, she’ll report it to the staff. Bruno has spies everywhere in this house.”
Rafe paused, considering her words. She was right. A missing maid would raise more suspicion than a quiet one.
“Fine,” Rafe agreed reluctantly. “But you do not clean the east corridor. You stay in the kitchens with Agnes. And you do not let Teddy Vain within fifty feet of you.”
The rest of the day passed in agonizing tension. Nell returned to her duties, keeping her head down and her ears open. She scrubbed pots in the kitchen, listening to the frantic gossip of the staff regarding the warehouse fire.
Agnes watched her closely but said nothing until the end of the shift.
“You’ve got a shadow, girl,” Agnes murmured, handing Nell a stack of clean towels. “Teddy’s men have been asking the groundskeepers about your schedule.”
Nell’s stomach dropped. “Thank you, Agnes.”
As Nell made her way toward the servant’s stairs, the lights in the long hallway suddenly flickered and died.
She froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. The darkness was absolute.
Heavy footsteps echoed from the opposite end of the corridor.

“Did you really think you could hide in plain sight, sweetheart?” Teddy Vain’s gravelly voice taunted from the shadows.
Nell dropped the towels and ran.
