Chapter 15 - The Confession

|

Teddy kept his eyes glued to the floor, terrified to look at the man he had betrayed.

“Teddy,” Rafe commanded softly, the authority in his voice unmistakable. “Tell the board exactly who paid you to cut the brakes on my father’s car five years ago.”

Teddy swallowed hard, glancing nervously at Bruno. “It was Bruno. He paid me two hundred thousand in cash. He said the old man was getting too soft, that he needed to take over the shipping lines.”

The boardroom erupted. Executives shouted, pushing their chairs back, desperately trying to distance themselves from the disgraced uncle.

“And the warehouse fire two nights ago?” Rafe pressed.

“Bruno ordered it,” Teddy confessed, his voice shaking. “It was a distraction. We were supposed to assassinate you when you arrived at the docks.”

Bruno lunged forward, his face twisted in pure, unadulterated rage. He reached inside his tailored jacket, drawing a heavy, silver-plated revolver.

“You arrogant little bastard!” Bruno screamed, aiming the weapon directly at Rafe’s chest.

The room dissolved into absolute chaos. Executives dove under the massive mahogany table.

Rafe didn't flinch. He didn't dive for cover. He reached out, his massive arm sweeping Nell forcefully behind him, shielding her body entirely with his own.

Before Bruno could pull the trigger, a deafening gunshot echoed through the boardroom.

Bruno’s eyes went wide. He dropped the revolver, clutching his chest as a dark red stain blossomed across his white shirt. He collapsed backward onto the floor, dead before he even realized what had happened.

Rafe slowly lowered his own suppressed pistol, smoking slightly in his hand. He had drawn and fired with terrifying, impossible speed.

He turned to the terrified board members cowering under the table.

“The vote of no confidence has been officially withdrawn,” Rafe stated coldly.
