Chapter 30

A few weeks after the archive’s public launch, the final legal technicalities of the Apex Zenith extortion case were officially dismissed with prejudice by a federal judge. Elias Thorne pleaded guilty to multiple counts of fraud to avoid a lengthy trial, completely surrendering any claim to the Blackwood estate. The threat was entirely, unequivocally neutralized.
To celebrate the absolute closure of the ordeal, Noah planned a quiet, intimate weekend getaway for our family. We rented a beautiful, rustic cabin near a serene mountain lake, far away from the bustling city and the lingering memories of courtrooms and corporate battles.
The cabin smelled of pine and woodsmoke. Clara spent the entire Saturday morning running along the shoreline, collecting smooth stones and marveling at the small fish darting in the shallows. Maya and Noah sat on the wooden dock, their legs dangling over the water, wrapped in a comfortable, companionable silence that only true partners share.
I sat in a rocking chair on the porch, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, watching them. The crisp mountain air filled my lungs, and for the first time in eighty years, I felt a deep, unshakeable sense of completion.
Later that evening, after a chaotic and joyful dinner of roasted hot dogs and marshmallows, Clara climbed into my lap while Maya stoked the fire in the stone hearth.
"Grandma," Clara yawned, rubbing her sleepy eyes. "Did the bad men go away forever?"
I looked over at Maya, who paused her tending of the fire to meet my gaze. There was no fear in her eyes, only the solid, fierce peace of a mother who had successfully protected her child.
"Yes, Clara," I whispered, kissing the top of her head. "The bad men went away forever. Because your mother is incredibly strong, and because we never stopped fighting for each other."
"I am strong too," Clara mumbled sleepily, her eyes fluttering shut.

"You are the strongest of all," I agreed softly.
The fire crackled warmly, casting long, dancing shadows on the cabin walls. There were no hidden cameras, no locked doors, and no conditional love. We were entirely safe, entirely sovereign, and entirely together.
