Chapter 23

The attempt to freeze our world began exactly as Elias Thorne had threatened, but he vastly underestimated the structural integrity of the defenses Maya had built. Three days after the meeting at the law firm, Elias attempted to execute a hostile proxy vote within the Meridian Industrial Group’s independent board, using the forged debt as leverage to claim temporary voting shares.
Maya and Noah were sitting at our kitchen table when the call came in from Meridian’s current CEO. Clara was outside in the backyard, happily chasing a yellow butterfly, entirely insulated from the corporate warfare.
"They filed an emergency petition in Delaware," Maya explained, hanging up her phone and rubbing her temples. "Elias is claiming that because the debt is unresolved, his consortium has the right to freeze the dividend payouts to my trust."
"Can they do that?" I asked, pouring a cup of hot coffee and setting it in front of her.
"Only if the board panics and accepts the validity of the forged document," Noah said, pulling up the corporate bylaws on his tablet. "But Elias forgot one crucial detail. When the courts restored Maya’s trust, they didn't just give her money. They gave her super-voting shares specifically designed to block hostile takeovers by Julian's former associates."
Maya smiled, a sharp, fierce expression. "Exactly. Julian built those super-voting shares to protect himself from the board. Now, I am going to use his own weapon to crush Elias."
She opened her laptop and immediately drafted a formal decree to the Meridian board. She invoked her super-voting rights, completely overriding Elias’s proxy petition and directing the corporate counsel to countersue Elias’s consortium for tortious interference.
"He thought I would panic," Maya said, hitting the send button with a satisfying click. "He thought I was still the vulnerable girl who could be bullied into submission by a piece of paper."

"He doesn't know you," I said, resting my hand on her shoulder. "He only knows the shadows Julian left behind. But you are the light."
Outside, Clara laughed loudly as she finally caught up to the butterfly, watching it flutter away over the fence. The contrast was beautiful. Inside, Maya was dismantling a multi-million-dollar corporate attack with absolute precision. Outside, her daughter was experiencing a childhood entirely free of fear.
