Chapter 5: The Poison at the Wedding Table

“He was drugged,” the doctor said.
Daniel’s voice cracked. “With what?”
“We’ll run tests, but he needs treatment now.”
Michael tried to speak. “The wine…”
Daniel bent close. “What wine?”
“At the wedding. Mom’s private toast.”
Emily looked horrified. “She served you wine?”
Michael nodded weakly. “I didn’t drink all of it.”
Daniel stood up. “I’m going back to the hotel.”
Emily grabbed his sleeve. “No. She wants you alone.”
“I need proof.”
Michael whispered, “Kitchen… silver cart…”
Daniel turned to the doctor. “Protect them.”
The doctor nodded. “Security will stay.”
Emily refused to release his hand. “Promise me you won’t trust anyone.”
Daniel kissed her forehead. “I only trust you.”
He ran out with two security guards, but Victoria was already waiting near the hospital entrance in a black car.
“Get in,” she said.
Daniel stopped. “You poisoned Michael.”
Victoria’s face showed no surprise. “Your brother has always been dramatic.”
“He has a needle mark.”
“Then perhaps he uses things you don’t know about.”
Daniel stepped closer. “You tried to kill my child.”
Victoria slapped him.
“You ungrateful boy.”
Daniel did not move.
She lowered her voice. “I built this family after your father died. I protected the company, the name, the money.”
“You protected power.”
“I protected you from women like Emily.”
“She loves me.”
“She loves the baby’s inheritance.”
Daniel laughed bitterly. “You sound scared.”
Victoria’s eyes sharpened. “That child will never control Hart Industries.”
“Then you admit it.”
She smiled. “Admit what? That I fear a baby? Don’t be foolish.”
Daniel pulled out his phone. “You’re on speaker with police.”
Victoria’s smile vanished.
A detective’s voice came through. “Mrs. Hart, stay where you are.”
Victoria looked around, then stepped into her car. “Drive!”
Daniel grabbed the door handle, but the car sped away, knocking him to the ground.
At the hotel, police searched the wedding kitchen.
A waiter pointed at a silver cart. “That was Mrs. Hart’s private service.”
Inside the cart, officers found a hidden compartment.
There were two vials.
One was labeled M.H.
The other was labeled E.H.
Daniel stared at the second label.
“Emily…”
His phone rang from the hospital.
The doctor’s voice was urgent.
“Mr. Hart, someone changed Emily’s medication order.”
Daniel’s blood ran cold.

“What did they give her?”
The doctor replied, “Something meant to stop the baby’s heartbeat.”
