Chapter 20: The Dawn

Outside, the cool night air was the sweetest thing Daniel had ever tasted.

He stood by the open doors of an ambulance, an oxygen mask draped loosely around his neck. Emily sat on the bumper, wrapped in a foil thermal blanket, cradling Hope. The baby was fast asleep, oblivious to the nightmare she had just survived.

Michael and Clara stood nearby, holding cups of coffee provided by the Red Cross, watching as Victoria was pushed into the back of a police cruiser. The doors slammed shut, locking her away from their lives forever.

Lane walked over, his face smeared with ash. "The fire is contained to the east wing. The vault is secure. We have the documents. Your father's real will, the embezzlement ledgers... she's never seeing the outside of a cell."

"Thank you, Detective," Daniel said quietly. "For believing us."

Lane offered a tired smile. "Just doing my job, Daniel. Go take care of your family."

As Lane walked away, Daniel turned back to Emily. He carefully wrapped his arms around her and his daughter, mindful of his injured side.

The sun was beginning to rise over the treeline of the estate, casting a warm, golden glow over the manicured lawns. The smoke from the mansion was already dissipating into the morning sky.

"It's over," Emily whispered, resting her head against Daniel's chest. "We actually made it."

Daniel looked down at Hope, her tiny chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythm.

"Yes, we did," Daniel said, kissing the top of Emily's head. "The empire is gone. But our family is just beginning."
