Chương 20 - The Midnight Vault

The air in the penthouse froze solid.

Vivian took a stumbling step backward, her back slamming against the server rack. Her breath hitched in her throat, a sound of pure, unadulterated terror and shock escaping her lips.

"Dad...?" she whispered, her voice trembling so violently she could barely form the syllable. "You... you died four years ago. I buried you."

Arthur Mercer smiled—a cold, calculating smile that mirrored Vivian’s own corporate mask, but devoid of any humanity. He walked slowly into the room, his cane tapping rhythmically against the hardwood floor. *Tap. Tap. Tap.*

"You buried an empty casket with a closed lid, my darling," Arthur Mercer said smoothly, his voice carrying the deep, resonant authority of a man who had manipulated markets before we were born. "A sudden heart attack in Monaco was the only way to avoid the 2020 international banking tribunals. Julian was an acceptable steward for a time, but he became greedy. He thought he could keep my throne."

He stopped five feet from us, his gray eyes sweeping over me with cold, analytical appraisal.

"And you," Arthur said, nodding toward me. "Arthur Sterling's boy. You have your father's stubborn eyes. But far more spine than he ever possessed."

My heart pounded like a war drum against my ribs, but my face remained carved from granite. "You set this whole thing up. From the beginning."

"Of course I did," Arthur said, leaning casually on his eagle cane. "Julian needed to be eliminated without triggering my own exposure. Vivian needed a trial by fire to see if she was worthy of inheriting the global network. And you, Leo... you were the perfect instrument. The Sterling name carries the original cryptographic keys to the hidden accounts in Liechtenstein. Without your active involvement, seventy billion dollars of legacy capital would have remained frozen by the Swiss Federal Banking Commission forever."

"You used me," Vivian whispered, tears finally spilling down her cheeks, her voice choked with horror. "You used my grief. You let me spend four years mourning you, fighting Julian alone, breaking myself in half to protect your legacy..."

"I built an empire, Vivian!" Arthur barked, his voice suddenly thunderous, rattling the glass walls of the penthouse. "Empires aren't handed down to sentimental children! They are seized through blood, leverage, and ruthlessness! And you proved yourself magnificent. You destroyed Julian. You secured the board. You brought Arthur Sterling's son right to the center of the web."

Arthur stepped forward and placed a heavy, gold-embossed leather folder on the desk beside my keyboard.

"The federal raid downstairs is entirely under my control," Arthur said quietly. "Assistant US Attorney Miller works for me. He always has. The search warrants are a theater performance to seize Julian's files and permanently erase every trace of my past operations."

He tapped the leather folder with a manicured finger.

"Inside this folder is the final settlement. A tripartite agreement. You, me, and Vivian. We dissolve Mercer & Holloway into a private sovereign wealth fund headquartered in Dubai. No SEC. No public shareholders. No DOJ."

Arthur Mercer leaned in, his piercing eyes locking onto mine with hypnotic intensity.

"You sign this, Leo, and you become the managing partner of twenty-five billion dollars. You clear your family's name completely. Arthur Sterling will be officially exonerated by a sealed presidential pardon I have already purchased."

"And if I refuse?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.

Arthur’s smile vanished, leaving a face of pure, merciless stone.

"If you refuse, the audio leak currently airing on CNBC becomes federal evidence. You and Vivian will be escorted out of this tower in handcuffs before noon. You will be indicted for treason, market manipulation, and corporate fraud. Vivian will spend twenty years in a maximum-security prison, and you will die in a cell, penniless, just like your father died on that bridge."

He checked his gold Patek Philippe watch.

"You have sixty seconds to decide, Leo. Sign the agreement and rule the world with my daughter..."

From outside the penthouse doors, the elevator bells chimed.

The heavy, rhythmic sound of tactical boots echoed down the long marble corridor toward the study. The raid had reached the thirty-fifth floor.

Vivian reached out, her trembling fingers curling around my wrist, her eyes wide, begging, torn between horror and the desperate instinct to survive.

Arthur Mercer held out a gold fountain pen.

"Thirty seconds," Arthur whispered.

The study doors began to open.
