Chương 16 - The Canary Protocol

We didn't call the police. In the upper echelons of Chicago finance, the police were an unpredictable variable.

When you held thirty billion dollars in corporate assets, you handled treason with closed doors, non-disclosure agreements, and financial decapitation.

At 2:45 AM, we entered the executive suite of Arthur Henderson, Chief Legal Counsel of Mercer & Holloway.

The lights were on. Henderson was there, his tie undone, frantically throwing confidential client files into an industrial shredder. A vintage leather travel bag sat half-zipped on his mahogany desk.

When the heavy oak door clicked shut behind Vivian, Marcus, and me, Henderson froze.

The rhythmic whir of the paper shredder was the only sound in the suffocating room.

"Leaving so early, Arthur?" Vivian asked, her voice dangerously sweet. "The markets don't open for another six hours."

Henderson slowly turned around. He looked twenty years older than he had that morning. Sweat beaded on his bald forehead, his hands trembling slightly as he clutched a sheaf of legal briefs.

"Vivian," he choked out, his voice cracked. "I... I was just securing some private files for the trial."

"You were securing your escape to Singapore," I said, stepping past Marcus and walking directly to the leather travel bag on the desk.

With one swift motion, I unzipped it and dumped its contents onto the desk: three fresh passports, two bearer bond certificates issued by a Swiss bank, and the matching gold flash drive that Elena Cross had boasted about at the Drake.

Vivian didn't look at the passports. She walked up to Henderson, her emerald dress trailing across the carpet like a spill of poisonous ink.

"Twenty-five years, Arthur," she said softly, stopping three inches from his chest. "You sat at my father's bedside when he died. You swore to him that you would protect this company. You swore you would protect me."

"Your father was a madman, Vivian!" Henderson hissed, desperation turning his fear into venom. "He built this empire on stolen technology and offshore money laundering! Julian Vance wasn't an anomaly—he was the natural evolution of what Arthur Mercer started! The Department of Justice has had an active probe since 2018. If I didn't cooperate with Vance, they were going to freeze every penny I had!"

"So you decided to sacrifice Leo?" Vivian’s voice was ice. "You put Arthur Sterling's son on the chopping block to save your own pathetic skin?"

Henderson gave a wet, bitter laugh, looking directly at me. "Ask her about Arthur Sterling, kid! Go on! Ask her why your father killed himself on the Skyway Bridge ten years ago!"

My jaw clenched, a surge of adrenaline firing through my veins. "Watch your mouth, Henderson."

"She knows!" Henderson shouted, saliva flying from his lips. "Her father didn't just freeze Arthur Sterling out of advisory fees! Vivian’s father framed Arthur for the exact same embezzlement scam Julian tried to pull! Arthur Sterling didn't commit suicide because of debt—he drove off that bridge because the Mercer family threatened to destroy your college fund, your mother's pension, and your family's name if he ever spoke to a federal prosecutor!"

The air in the room was sucked out completely.

I turned my head. Vivian’s face had gone paper-white.

"Arthur..." she whispered, her hands shaking slightly. "That’s... that’s not true. My father told me—"

"Your father lied to you, Vivian," Henderson whispered, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. "Just like you lied to Leo when you walked up to his table at singles night. The apple doesn't fall far from the corporate tree, does it?"

I looked at Vivian. For the first time, her iron composure was shattered into absolute fragments. The realization that her family's empire was built on the blood of my own father hit her like a physical blow.

"Marcus," I said, my voice dangerously calm, devoid of all emotion.

"Yes, Mr. Sterling?" the security chief replied.

"Take Mr. Henderson down to holding room C-2. Confiscate his phones, his passports, and the drive. If he attempts to contact Elena Cross or Damon Mercer, make sure he understands what a criminal referral with foreign espionage enhancements looks like."

"Understood, sir."

Marcus seized Henderson by the arm and dragged the sobbing, cursing old lawyer out of the suite, the heavy doors slamming shut behind them.

I stood alone in the office with Vivian.

She looked at me, her eyes filled with a terrifying combination of guilt, sorrow, and raw panic.

"Leo..." she choked out. "I didn't know. I swear on my life, I didn't know about your father."

"We're not talking about my father right now," I said coldly, walking to the desk and picking up the gold flash drive. "We're talking about survival. Because if Elena Cross has a copy of what's on this drive, the SEC is going to raid this building at sunrise."
