Chương 15 - The Audit Room

By 1:30 AM, the Drake Hotel was far behind us.

We were back in the belly of the beast: the subterranean Level B-4 archive vault of the Mercer & Holloway Tower.

Down here, there were no glass walls, no breathtaking views of Lake Michigan, and no champagne. Just endless rows of climate-controlled server racks humming like angry hornets, steel filing cabinets, and the smell of ozone and dry paper.

Vivian had thrown off her emerald heels, pacing barefoot across the cold concrete floor with her gown gathered in one hand. She looked manic, furious, and fiercely dangerous.

"Five people had access to the server room keycard logs that night," she muttered, pacing in front of the terminal where I was running diagnostics. "Five people. Marcus from security. Henderson from Global Risk. Patel from Accounting. Evelyn, my chief of staff. And myself."

"You forgot one," I said without looking up from the monitor.

She stopped pacing. "Who?"

"Me."

"I know it wasn't you, Leo!" she snapped, turning to face me. "If you were Julian's mole, you wouldn't have handed me the flash drive that crushed him!"

"Unless I was playing both sides," I said, typing a rapid series of decryption commands into the terminal. "Unless I knew that by taking Julian down, I would get fifty percent of the voting shares and complete access to the offshore master ledger."

Vivian walked slowly toward the back of my chair. Her bare feet made no sound against the concrete. She placed both hands on my shoulders, leaning down until her breath touched my ear. Her fingers dug through the fabric of my dress shirt, sharp and possessive.

"Are you playing both sides, Leo?" she asked in a low, husky whisper. "Because if you are, you're doing a terrible job. You should have sold me out to Elena at the Drake. She would have offered you immunity and ten million dollars to walk away."

"Ten million is an insult," I said, leaning back against her hands, looking up into her dark, mesmerizing eyes. "I don't play for settlements, Vivian. I play for the whole board."

"Then find out who sold the image," she demanded softly, her lips brushing my temple. "Find them, and I’ll give you whatever you want. More shares. Full board veto. Anything."

"I don't want shares right now," I said, catching her wrist and pulling her hand around to look at the screen. "Look at this."

On the glowing green terminal, a directory of deleted file transfers popped up.

Three hours before the gala, an unauthorized backup had been routed through the internal intranet. The destination wasn't an external IP address. It had been downloaded directly to a localized port inside the building.

"Port 104," Vivian read off the screen, her brow furrowing. "That's... that's the legal compliance office."

"Henderson," I said grimly. "Julian’s old mentor. The man who drafted your restructuring charter."

"Henderson has been with my father for twenty-five years," Vivian whispered, stepping back, her face stricken with genuine disbelief. "He watched me grow up. He was at my college graduation. He's the trustee of my private trust."

"He's also facing a six-million-dollar tax audit in the Cayman Islands," I replied, bringing up Henderson’s personal disclosure statements that I had quietly mined during the elevator ride up. "Julian promised to cover his debt in exchange for a backdoor pass. When Julian got arrested, Henderson panicked. He needed a bargaining chip to keep himself out of federal prison, so he reached out to Damon and Elena Cross."

Vivian’s posture changed instantly. The vulnerability vanished, replaced by an arctic, murderous rage that made the hair on my arms stand up.

"He drafted page fourteen," she said, her voice dead flat. "The indemnification clause. He told me it was standard legal language to protect the CEO."

"He didn't draft it to protect you from the DOJ," I said, shutting down the terminal with a hard keystroke. "He drafted it so that when Elena released the doctored server logs, I would take the fall, Julian would get a mistrial based on tainted evidence, and Henderson would slip out the back door with his offshore millions intact."

Vivian reached down, grabbed her emerald heels, and looked at me with eyes that could have burned steel.

"Call Marcus," she whispered. "Tell him to bring two private security officers to the thirty-second floor. We're paying Mr. Henderson a midnight visit."
