Chapter 20 - The Unseen Horizon

A month later, a fragile, heavy peace had settled over Chicago.

Hannah and Lorenzo stood together on the back patio of the estate, watching Nero run freely through the expansive, newly reinforced gardens. The wolfdog looked healthy, his coat shining in the afternoon sun, completely free of the terror that had once consumed him.

Lorenzo wrapped his arms around Hannah's waist from behind, pulling her lush curves back against his chest. He kissed the side of her neck, breathing in her scent.

"He looks happy," Lorenzo murmured, watching the dog chase a butterfly.

"He is," Hannah smiled, leaning into his solid embrace. "We both are."

Lorenzo turned her around, pulling a small, black velvet box from his pocket. He didn't drop to one knee—his shoulder was still stiff—but the look in his dark eyes was more reverent than any traditional proposal.

Lorenzo’s smile vanished. His protective instincts instantly flared, pulling Hannah slightly behind him.

He took the box from Marco and carefully popped the latch.

Inside the black box sat a single, silver bullet. And beneath it was a small, handwritten note on heavy parchment paper.

Lorenzo read the note, his jaw tightening so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek.

"What does it say?" Hannah asked, a cold knot forming in her stomach.

Lorenzo looked up at her, his eyes dark with the promise of impending violence.

"It's from the New York Syndicate," Lorenzo said grimly, closing the box. "They say congratulations on the engagement. And they say they look forward to meeting my new weakness."

Hannah looked down at the massive diamond on her finger, then out at the terrifying wolfdog patrolling the garden. She took Lorenzo's hand, lacing her fingers through his.

"Let them come," she said fiercely.

The war wasn't over. But they were ready.
