Chapter 19 - The Syndicate's Warning

|
Two weeks later, the physical damage to the estate was mostly repaired, but the political fallout within the Chicago syndicate was just beginning.
Lorenzo called a meeting of his top Capos in the grand dining room. It was a display of strength, a necessary flex to remind the families who held the crown after the assassination attempt.
Hannah stood on the balcony overlooking the room, hidden in the shadows, watching the dangerous men gather around the long mahogany table. Nero sat by her side like a gargoyle, perfectly still.
"Vincent's treason has been dealt with," Lorenzo announced, standing at the head of the table. His arm was still in a sling, but his presence was as terrifying as ever. "The loyalists are dead. The territory is secure."
An older, grizzled Capo named Salvatore cleared his throat.
"We respect your strength, Don Lorenzo," Salvatore said cautiously. "But there are whispers. Whispers that you are distracted. That a civilian woman is living in the estate, clouding your judgment. Our enemies will see this as a weakness."
The tension in the room spiked. It was a blatant challenge to Lorenzo's authority.
Lorenzo didn't yell. He didn't slam his fist on the table.
He slowly looked up to the balcony, making eye contact with Hannah in the shadows. He gave her a single, reassuring nod.
Then, Lorenzo looked back at Salvatore. The temperature in the room plummeted.
"The woman you are referring to," Lorenzo said, his voice a low, lethal rumble, "is my future wife. She is the Donna of this family."
The Capos gasped collectively, exchanging shocked glances.
"She is not a civilian," Lorenzo continued, his dark eyes daring any man to object. "She is the reason I am alive today. And she is completely, utterly untouchable. If any man in this room, or any man in this city, speaks of her with disrespect, or looks at her as a weakness, I will personally cut their throat. Are we clear?"
The absolute, murderous certainty in his voice left no room for debate.

"Crystal clear, Boss," Salvatore swallowed hard, bowing his head respectfully. The other Capos quickly followed suit.
Up on the balcony, Hannah smiled, resting her hand on Nero's head. She wasn't just a shelter volunteer anymore. She was the Queen of the Underworld.
