Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

|
Hannah didn't freeze. Eight years of breaking up dog fights had taught her that hesitation got you killed.
She ripped off her high heels in one fluid motion, hurling one directly at Silas’s face. The stiletto caught him in the cheek, making him shout in surprise and drop his aim for a fraction of a second.
It was all the time she needed.
Hannah sprinted down the service hallway, her bare feet silent on the carpet.
"Get her!" Vincent yelled from behind.
She burst through the heavy double doors at the end of the hall, practically colliding with Lorenzo, who had just stepped out of the main ballroom looking for her.
"Hannah!" Lorenzo caught her by the shoulders, his eyes wild with sudden panic. "What's wrong? Why are you running?"
"They're going to drug you," Hannah gasped, clinging to his lapels. "Vincent and Silas. They have a triple dose of the stimulant they gave Nero. They're going to spike your drink to give you a heart attack."
Lorenzo’s face went completely still. The panic vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying coldness that dropped the temperature in the corridor by ten degrees.
The double doors swung open again. Vincent and Silas rushed through, stopping dead when they saw Lorenzo standing there, shielding Hannah behind his massive frame.
Silas tried to hide the gun behind his back, but it was too late.
"Lorenzo, wait, she's lying!" Vincent stammered, his face turning an ugly shade of gray. "The bitch is crazy!"
Lorenzo didn't yell. He didn't argue.
He moved with a terrifying, lethal grace. In one fluid motion, Lorenzo drew a weapon from his shoulder holster and fired a single, suppressed shot.
Silas dropped to the floor, a bullet in his knee, screaming in agony.
Vincent fell to his knees, begging, crying for his life.
Lorenzo didn't shoot his cousin. He looked down at him with utter disgust.
"Marco," Lorenzo said calmly as his second-in-command rushed into the hallway. "Take my cousin to the basement of the estate. I will deal with him personally tonight."
"Yes, Boss," Marco said, dragging the sobbing Vincent away.
Lorenzo holstered his weapon. He turned back to Hannah, his eyes dark with adrenaline and fierce protectiveness. He gently cupped her face.
"Did they hurt you?" he whispered, his voice trembling slightly.
May you like
"No," Hannah breathed out. "I'm okay."
"Let's go home."
