Chương 4 - Behind Fortified Walls

The penthouse was silent except for the low hum of the air purification system and the distant, muffled sirens echoing from the city below. Floor-to-ceiling bulletproof glass overlooked the glittering skyline of New York, but Luna couldn’t look at the view. She stood in the center of the vast living room, clutching the fabric of her apron like a lifeline.
Luca had discarded his tuxedo jacket over the back of an armchair. He poured two fingers of amber whiskey into a crystal tumbler, drank half of it in one swallow, and turned to look at her.
“Take off the apron, Luna,” he said gently.
“No,” she whispered, crossing her arms defensively over her chest. “I am not your wife, Señor Luca. I am your maid. I don't know what kind of sick game you are playing to anger your father or humiliate those rich girls, but I want no part of it.”
Luca set the tumbler down with a soft click on the glass coffee table. He walked over to her slowly, giving her plenty of time to retreat, but she held her ground, her dark eyes flashing with defiance.
“You think this is a game?” he asked, stopping inches away. “You think I would put a target on your back just to spite Yuri Vulov?”
“Then why?!” she demanded, her voice cracking with emotion. “Why me? I am nobody! I have no money, no powerful family, no political connections. Katarina Vulov could have given you an army! I give you nothing but enemies!”
Luca’s expression softened, something intensely tender slipping past his hardened mobster facade.
“You give me truth,” he said, his voice dropping to a low, intimate gravel. “Do you have any idea what my life is, Luna? From the day I was born, every smile given to me was calculated. Every friend had a price. Every woman who ever looked at me was measuring the caliber of my gun or the size of my bank vault.”
He lifted his hand, his knuckles lightly grazing her cheek. Luna flinched slightly, but she didn’t pull away. His skin was warm, calloused from years of handling weapons, yet his touch was impossibly gentle.
“For three years,” Luca continued, his green eyes burning into hers, “you were the only person in this house who didn't want anything from me. You looked at me like a man, not a Capo. When you brought me coffee at four in the morning when my head was pounding from budget reports, you did it with kindness. When you left those books in Spanish on the counter for me to correct your grammar, you trusted me.”
“That was just... you being decent to an employee,” she argued weakly, her heart fluttering dangerously at his closeness.
“I am not decent, Luna,” Luca said bluntly. “I am a killer. I have buried men in shallow graves. I run an empire built on extortion, blood, and fear. But with you... with you, I remember who I was before my father handed me a pistol at fourteen.”
He stepped even closer, his scent of sandalwood, whiskey, and raw masculinity overwhelming her senses.
“I didn't choose Katarina because the Vulovs want to swallow the Moretti family whole. Her father planned to poison my father within six months of our wedding and turn me into a puppet. Gianna Torino’s uncle is already selling our shipping routes to the cartel. If I had married either of them, I would have signed our death warrants.”
Luna swallowed hard, the terrifying complexity of his world unfolding before her. “So I am your shield?”
“No,” Luca said, his fingers slipping down to cradle her jaw, his thumb tracing the curve of her lower lip. “You are my anchor. If I am going to burn this underworld to the ground and rebuild it so no one can ever touch us again... I need someone beside me whose soul hasn’t rotted.”
Luna stared at him, her chest heaving. The sheer raw hunger in his eyes terrified her, not because she thought he would hurt her, but because deep down, in the secret chambers of her heart she had guarded for three years, she knew she loved him. She had loved him since the night he drove through a blizzard to bring her antibiotics.
“They will come for me,” she whispered, the reality of her danger setting in. “They will use me to break you.”
Luca’s jaw set into stone, the ruthless heir apparent returning in an instant.
“They will try,” he said. “And I will butcher anyone who takes a breath in your direction.”
Before Luna could respond, the heavy steel reinforced door of the penthouse hissed open.
Vincent Torino strode in, his heavy overcoat open, his face dark as a storm cloud. Behind him stood Don Salvatore, leaning heavily on his silver cane, his breathing ragged.

“Luca,” the Don rasped, stepping into the room. “We have a problem.”
