Chapter 12 - The Blood Lineage

Saint Jude’s Private Clinic smelled of antiseptic, industrial bleach, and old money.

The entire fifth floor had been evacuated three days prior. Luca’s personal security force occupied every doorway, their hands resting on the grips of concealed submachine guns beneath tailored overcoats. No doctor entered without a pat-down; no nurse administered medicine without Luca’s personal chemist testing the vials first.

Don Salvatore Moretti lay in the center of the ICU suite, hooked up to a tangle of tubes and blinking monitors. The legendary "Lion of New York," who had ruled the Eastern seaboard for forty years with an iron fist, looked shrunken and fragile beneath the white hospital sheets. His breathing was a mechanical hiss, forced into his lungs by a respirator.

Luna stood near the foot of the bed, feeling profoundly out of place. Just forty-eight hours ago, she had been dusting the grandfather clock in the Moretti study, keeping her head lowered whenever Don Salvatore walked into the room. Now, she stood in a torn, soot-stained evening gown, wearing the Moretti family emerald around her neck, flanked by the deadliest killers in the city.

"He looks so small," she murmured softly.

Luca stood beside the bed, his arms crossed over his chest. He looked at his father not with the sorrow of a grieving son, but with the cold calculation of an heir awaiting an inheritance paid in blood.

"Power is an illusion, Luna," Luca said quietly. "It only exists as long as other men believe you can kill them. The second my father closed his eyes, his empire shrank to the size of this mattress."

The door swung open, and an elderly man in a sharp three-piece suit walked in, carrying a heavy leather briefcase. It was Corrado Rossi, the family's oldest consigliere and legal architect. His silver hair was combed back immaculately, but the dark circles under his eyes betrayed his exhaustion.

Corrado gave Luna a long, dismissive glance before turning to Luca. "Don Luca. We have a catastrophic problem."

"Speak," Luca ordered without turning his head.

"The Commission met an hour ago in Brooklyn," Corrado said, lowering his voice. "Word of what happened at the ballroom spread like wildfire. Don Bellini has called for your immediate excommunication from the Five Families."

"Let him call for whatever he wants," Luca growled. "He sent a sniper to the docks. His life is already forfeit."

"It's not just Bellini, Luca!" Corrado snapped, his composure cracking. "The traditionalists are backing him! According to the sacred constitution of the Syndicate, an unmarried Don cannot claim the seat of the Capo dei Capi if his father falls into a coma without formally signing the Succession Decree. Salvatore was going to sign it tonight—upon your marriage to Gianna Bellini!"

Luca turned slowly, towering over the old lawyer. "I made my choice. Luna is my consort. She will be my wife."

Corrado scoffed, gesturing violently at Luna. "Her? She has no bloodline! She has no backing, no soldiers, no political leverage! She was pouring your coffee on Tuesday, Luca! If you marry this maid, the other four families will refuse to recognize your legitimacy. Chicago won't negotiate with you. They will treat you as an illegitimate usurper and wipe the Moretti name off the map!"

"Say another word about her," Luca whispered, his tone dropping to an absolute zero that made the old consigliere freeze, "and I will have Enzo hang you by your ankles from the Manhattan Bridge."

"Luca, stop," Luna’s voice cut through the tension, clear and firm.

Both men turned to look at her.

Luna stepped forward, her dark eyes flashing with an inner steel that neither man had expected. She looked at Corrado without a single trace of deference.

"You say I have no leverage, Consigliere," Luna said evenly. "You say I have no bloodline. But for three years, I cleaned Don Salvatore's private study. I emptied the shredder. I dusted the antique bookcase behind his desk—specifically the hollowed-out collection of Dante’s *Inferno*."

Corrado’s face drained of color. "How do you know about that?"

"Because while you men were busy waving guns and screaming about respect," Luna continued, stepping right into Corrado’s personal space, "I was the ghost in the room that no one bothered to notice. In that false book, Don Salvatore kept the original offshore routing numbers for the Commission's black treasury. Half of Bellini’s private wealth is laundered through a shell company in Panama called *Mariposa Blue*."

Luna turned her gaze to Luca, a fierce, brilliant spark in her gaze. "You don't need Gianna's dowry to control the families, Luca. You just need to freeze their money. And I know the passwords."

Luca stared at her. A slow, breathtaking smile crept across his lips. He took two long strides toward her, wrapped a hand around the nape of her neck, and pulled her in for a searing, possessive kiss right in front of the horrified lawyer.

When he pulled back, his green eyes were ablaze. "Did you hear that, Corrado?" Luca asked, never taking his eyes off Luna’s flushed face. "My maid just bought the city."
