Chương 2 - The Choice

The ballroom of the Moretti estate was a monument to old-world excess. Massive crystal chandeliers threw fractured light across gilded moldings, while three hundred of the most dangerous men and women in the Western hemisphere drank champagne out of hand-blown glass.

Luna stood by the service doors on the east wall, clutching a silver tray loaded with fresh champagne flutes. Her knees ached, but her mind was entirely consumed by the spectacle unfolding on the elevated dais at the front of the hall.

Don Salvatore Moretti stood before an antique microphone. Even though his heart attack six months prior had thinned his frame and left his skin with a pale, paper-thin hue, he commanded the room with absolute authority. Behind him stood the Capos of the five allied families: the Torinos, the Rosettis, the Vulovs, the Morenos, and the DeLucas.

And beside his father stood Luca.

He looked like a young emperor waiting to claim a conquered world. The black tuxedo clung to his athletic frame; his hands rested lightly in his pockets, unaffected by the suffocating weight of three hundred pairs of eyes.

“Friends. Brothers in blood,” Don Salvatore’s voice echoed through the high-ceilinged room, amplified by hidden speakers. “For seventy years, the Moretti family has kept peace in this city. We have maintained the docks, the streets, and the borders through unity and bloodlines.”

A murmur of agreement rippled through the older mobsters.

“Tonight, that legacy passes to my son, Luca,” the old Don continued, his dark eyes sweeping over the crowd. “To lead this family, a man needs strength, loyalty, and a partner who understands the weight of our name. Tonight, as tradition dictates, Luca will choose his bride from among the daughters of our proudest allies.”

A ripple of nervous excitement shot through the first three rows of the ballroom.

Katarina Vulov, the stunning blonde daughter of the Russian syndicate boss, smoothed the skirt of her ruby Valentino gown, a triumphant smile already curling her painted red lips. Her father, Yuri Vulov, crossed his burly arms, looking around the room as if daring anyone to dispute the outcome. Next to her, Gianna Torino, draped in emerald silk and half a million dollars in diamonds, held her chin high, though her eyes were sharp with competition.

Everyone in the underworld knew the math. The Vulov alliance meant absolute control over the Eastern ports and fifty million dollars in fresh capital. The Torino alliance meant military strength—two hundred heavily armed soldiers ready to crush the Chicago syndicate.

It was business. Pure, cold mathematics.

“Luca,” Don Salvatore said, stepping back from the microphone and gesturing his son forward. “Take your place. Choose the woman who will carry our name.”

Luca stepped up to the microphone. The room fell into a silence so absolute that Luna could hear the ice melting in the silver bucket beside her.

He didn’t look at Katarina. He didn’t glance toward Gianna. His green eyes swept across the room slowly, deliberately, bypassing every billionaire heiress, every polished princess of the underworld, until they reached the far eastern wall.

Straight toward the shadows. Straight toward the service doors.

Straight to Luna.

Luna’s breath caught in her throat. Her grip on the tray tightened until her knuckles went stark white. *No,* she thought in blind panic. *Don’t look at me. Please, Luca, don't look here.*

Luca reached inside his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a velvet box. He didn't open it. He held it in his right hand, took the microphone off its stand, and began walking down the marble steps of the dais.

A low murmur rippled through the crowd. Katarina took half a step forward, her chest rising in anticipation, her hand subtly reaching out.

Luca walked straight past her.

He didn't even turn his head. He walked past Gianna Torino, past the Rosetti twins, past the daughters of the Miami and Boston cartels. The crowd parted before him like water, murmurs turning into confused whispers, then dead, suffocating silence.

Luca kept walking, his long strides confident, purposeful, until he stopped three feet in front of the service door.

Right in front of Luna.

The room held its breath. Luna felt three hundred pairs of lethal eyes drill into her back. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

“Señor Luca,” she breathed, her voice trembling so badly the flutes on her tray clinked against each other. “What are you doing?”

Luca didn't answer with words. He reached out with his left hand and took the heavy silver tray from her trembling fingers, setting it casually on a nearby high-top table.

Then, in front of the most powerful mob bosses in North America, Luca Moretti took her small, rough hand in his.

He turned toward the center of the ballroom, his voice ringing out with razor-sharp clarity, amplified by the house speakers.

“Everyone expected me to choose a daughter of wealth,” Luca announced, his grip on Luna’s hand tightening, warm and unbreakable. “Someone who brings guns, territory, or blood-soaked millions to our table.”

He lifted Luna’s hand, displaying her calloused fingers, her black cotton dress, her plain white apron to the entire room.

“Instead,” Luca declared, his voice echoing off the high stone arches, “I choose loyalty. I choose someone who has never lied to me. I choose someone who owes nothing to any of you.”

He pointed down at her, meeting his father’s frozen stare across the grand expanse.

“I choose her.”

Five words.
