CHAPTER 8: HUNTED IN MY OWN WALLS
“They’re in a place you’ll never reach, Mark,” I said, my voice dropping into a cold, lethal calm.
He lunged at me, his fingers clawing for my throat.
I swung the shattered lamp, the jagged metal tearing through his expensive suit jacket and slicing across his forearm. He screamed in pain, stumbling backward into the desk, sending stacks of paperwork flying through the air.
“Kill her!” Mark roared toward the hallway. “Forget the keys, just eliminate her!”
The two tactical fixers rushed into the room, their weapons raised.
But I didn't wait for them to aim. I dropped to the floor and pulled the master emergency cable hidden beneath the lip of the desk—a manual override I had secretly installed when the smart house was built.
The fire suppression system engaged.
A dense, blinding torrent of chemical fog erupted from the ceiling vents, instantly filling the study and the hallway with a thick, choking white cloud. It wasn't water; it was an oxygen-depriving suppressant designed to kill electrical fires in seconds.
The mercenaries began to cough violently, their night-vision goggles completely blinded by the dense chemical fog. They fired blindly into the room, the flashes of their weapons illuminating the white mist like lightning.

I crawled along the baseboards, where the air was still clear, slipping through the broken doorway into the main hallway.
Mark was stumbling through the fog behind me, swearing, crying, completely undone by the chaos.
