CHAPTER 4: THE SILENT BACKDOOR

CHAPTER 4: THE SILENT BACKDOOR

The mansion was quiet, but it was no longer peaceful.

Paramedics had patched up the deep cut on my cheek, leaving me alone in the sprawling, echoing emptiness of the living room. The blood had been scrubbed from the hardwood, but the ghost of the violence still lingered in the air.

I sat at the kitchen island, staring at the main security monitor.

Mark was behind bars. The asset-protection lockdown had worked perfectly.

But as my vision fully cleared, free from the blurred shadows of the past few weeks, I noticed something strange on the system log. The automated server wipe had finished, but a small, persistent green icon was pulsing in the corner of the administrator dashboard.

A remote connection.

My breath hitched. The data-wipe hadn't just destroyed Mark’s fake passports; it had opened a hidden, external communication port.

I tapped the glass screen, pulling up the deep-system code. Mark wasn’t smart enough to build a custom backdoor into a military-grade security system. He was a thief, a corporate fraudster, but he wasn’t a hacker.

Someone else had built this system for him.

A text file suddenly materialized on the center of the monitor, bypassing my encryption protocols entirely. It didn't come from a phone number. It came from an untraceable dark-web proxy.

“The asset is secured. The wife remains. Clean the house.”

The realization hit me like a physical blow. Mark hadn’t been embezzling millions for himself. He was laundering money for a shadow organization that didn't tolerate loose ends.

And by locking Mark inside with the police, I had just inherited his target.
