CHAPTER 10: CLEAN AIR AT LAST

CHAPTER 10: CLEAN AIR AT LAST
The sound of federal sirens cut through the cold Chicago night, a massive convoy of tactical vehicles breaching the perimeter gates within minutes.
Detective Vance led the sweep himself, his team cutting through the smart house's overrides with heavy hydraulic tools. They dragged the two Vanguard fixers out in zip-ties, followed by Mark, who was too broken to even ask for his lawyers this time.
Vance walked into the kitchen, his jacket soaked from the rain, looking at the blinking green monitors.
“We intercepted the Vanguard handlers at O’Hare airport,” Vance said, taking off his hat. “The data you routed to us broke their entire operational network wide open. You didn't just catch your husband, Rachel. You broke a cartel.”
I looked out the high glass windows. The storm had finally passed, the dark clouds parting to reveal a vast, star-lit sky over the city.
“Is it over?” I asked quietly.
“It’s over,” Vance affirmed. “Mark is going away for the rest of his natural life. No bail. No loopholes. The house is secure.”
I walked out onto the front patio, stepping past the shattered glass and the tire tracks in the mud. I unclipped the medical tape from my cheek, letting the cool, clean night wind hit the scar.
The house was empty now. The smart systems were silent, stripped of their dangerous codes and external backdoors. It was just a structure of glass and steel again.

But as I took a deep, unrestricted breath of the crisp winter air, I smiled.
The walls no longer felt like a cage. The trap had sprung, the monsters were gone, and for the first time in my life, the light belonged entirely to me.
