Chapter 16 - Crossfire

"Kill him!" Victor roared, diving behind a stack of shipping crates.
The warehouse erupted into a deafening warzone. Gabriel fired from the catwalk, taking down three of Victor's men before they could even raise their weapons. Simultaneously, the heavy steel warehouse doors blew open, and Dominic flooded the room with Costello enforcers.
Madeline hit the concrete floor, covering her head as bullets tore through the air, sparking against metal and shredding wooden crates.
"Maddie!" Nathan screamed, scrambling toward her.
"Get away from me!" she cried, crawling behind a concrete pillar for cover.
Above the chaos, Gabriel moved like a shadow. He vaulted over the catwalk railing, dropping fifteen feet onto a stack of crates, returning fire with lethal precision. He was a one-man army, his eyes locked on Victor Romano.
"Cover the girl!" Gabriel shouted to Dominic over the gunfire.
Dominic fought his way across the floor, hauling Madeline up by her jacket. "Move! To the truck!"
But Victor Romano wasn't going to let his prize escape. Emerging from cover, Victor raised his pistol, aiming directly at Madeline’s back as she ran toward the exit.
"Costello!" Victor screamed.
Gabriel turned. He saw the gun pointed at Madeline.
Time seemed to slow down. Gabriel didn't think. He threw himself off the crate, putting his body between Victor's gun and Madeline just as Victor pulled the trigger.
BANG.
Gabriel jerked backward violently as the bullet tore into his side.

"Gabriel!" Madeline screamed, watching him collapse onto the concrete.
Before Victor could fire again, Dominic raised his weapon and put two bullets squarely into Victor Romano’s chest. The rival boss fell backward, dead before he hit the ground.
