Chapter 15 - Betrayal in the Rain

Madeline froze, her heart plummeting into her stomach. She looked at her brother.
"Nathan? What is this? Why aren't you tied up?"
Nathan couldn't meet her eyes. He stared at his expensive Italian leather shoes. "I'm sorry, Maddie. The gambling debt... it was too much. Victor said he’d pay off Costello, and give me a million on top. All I had to do was make the call and get you to bring the ring."
The betrayal hit her like a physical blow. She gasped, taking a step back.
"You sold me out?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "I have been locked in a mafia safehouse! I have been shot at! I risked my life for you, and you set me up for money?!"
"I didn't have a choice!" Nathan yelled defensively. "Costello would have killed me!"
"Costello was on his way here to save you!" Madeline screamed.
Victor chuckled, dropping his cigar and crushing it under his heel. "Such a touching family reunion. But we’re on a schedule. Hand over the ring, sweetheart, and I’ll let you and your pathetic brother walk out of here."
Madeline looked at Victor, then at Nathan. Her blood ran cold.
"You're lying," she said to Victor. "The moment I take this ring off, you’ll kill us both."
"Smart girl," a new voice echoed from the shadows of the catwalk above.
Everyone looked up.

Gabriel Costello stepped out of the darkness, a high-powered rifle resting easily in his hands. He looked down at Victor with eyes as cold as death.
"I told you to stay in the cabin, Madeline," Gabriel said, his voice booming through the warehouse.
