Chapter 13 - A Brother’s Shadow

|

"I have to go to him!" Madeline yelled, shoving Gabriel in the chest. It was like pushing a brick wall.

"Use your head, Madeline!" Gabriel grabbed her shoulders, holding her firmly but gently. "Victor Romano traced the ATM ping, grabbed your idiot brother, and forced him to make that call to lure you out. If you go to Navy Pier, you die."

"If I don't go, Nathan dies!" she cried, tears spilling over her eyelashes. "He's the only family I have left, Gabriel! You expect me to just sit here and let them execute him?"

Gabriel’s expression hardened. He let go of her and walked over to the weapons bag by the door. He began loading a fresh magazine into his Glock.

"I didn't say we were going to let him die," Gabriel said coldly. "I said you are not walking into a trap."

Madeline wiped her eyes. "What are you going to do?"

"I’m going to Chicago. I’ll bring your brother back."

"You can't go alone! Victor has an army!"

"I have Dominic and fifty heavily armed men waiting at the city limits," Gabriel racked the slide of his gun, the metallic click echoing in the quiet cabin. "You stay here. Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone except me."

"Take me with you," Madeline pleaded, grabbing his arm. "Victor wants the ring. Use me as bait again. It worked last time."

"Last time, I almost lost you," Gabriel said, his voice suddenly thick with an emotion she hadn’t heard before. He looked down at her hand, gripping his sleeve. "I won't risk that again. Stay here, Madeline. That’s an order."

He turned and walked out into the cold rain, leaving her completely alone.
