Chapter 4 - Sins of the Brother

Chloe stared at the man standing before her, her mind racing through the horrific reality of her situation. Tommy had always been reckless. He had stolen money from her purse to feed his gambling addiction. He had forged their mother’s signature on a loan before she died. But this? This was a death sentence.
“Tommy doesn't even know what he stole,” Chloe whispered, sinking into one of the heavy leather armchairs. She rubbed her throbbing temples. “He probably thought it was just a regular safe. He’s an idiot, Mr. Russo. He’s not a master thief.”
“Ignorance does not grant immunity from bullets, Chloe,” Dominic said, leaning against the edge of his mahogany desk. “Volkov’s men are currently tearing the city apart looking for him. If they find him first, they will skin him alive to get the location of those drives.”
“How did you even know who I was?” Chloe asked, looking up at him. “I’ve worked here for two years. You’ve never even looked in my direction.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. He reached into his jacket pocket and tossed a thick manila folder onto the desk.
“I know everything about everyone who works in my building,” Dominic stated flatly. “I know you work double shifts to pay off your mother’s medical debts. I know you walk four blocks to the train station every night at 2:00 AM. And I know that Tommy listed your address as his emergency contact when he borrowed money from one of my bookies six months ago.”
Chloe felt a flush of embarrassment mixed with absolute terror. She was entirely exposed. This man had known her entire life story while she was busy serving him cocktails.
“So you've been watching me,” she said.
“I have been keeping an eye on my investment,” Dominic corrected smoothly. “Tommy’s debt to me is insignificant compared to what he took from Volkov. But the moment I heard Volkov put a bounty on the sister of the thief, I knew they would come here.”
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the office flew open. Vincent, the club manager, rushed in, his face pale and slick with sweat.
“Boss,” Vincent panted, ignoring Chloe completely. “We have a massive problem. Volkov didn't just send those three scouts. There are five black SUVs circling the block. They are blocking the alleys. The Russians are preparing to breach the club.”

Dominic didn't flinch. His dark eyes flickered toward the windows overlooking the street.
“They are getting bold,” Dominic murmured, his voice laced with venom. He turned to Chloe, extending his hand once again. “Time to go, waitress. The war just started early.”
