Chapter 20 - The Unseen Crown

Chloe stared at the screen, her eyes tracing the name at the top of the master ledger. It wasn't a Russian oligarch. It wasn't a cartel boss.
The name was Alexander Adams.
“Adams?” Chloe breathed, her heart suddenly seizing in her chest. She looked up at Dominic, her face devoid of all color. “That’s… that’s my father’s name. But my father died when I was six. He was a high school math teacher. He had nothing.”
Dominic stared at the ledger, his mind racing through fifteen years of mafia history, connections, and blood feuds. He looked at the girl sitting beside him—the shy waitress who had spilled a drink, the girl who had walked into a Russian compound to sacrifice herself.
“He wasn't a math teacher, Chloe,” Dominic said slowly, the terrifying magnitude of the truth settling over the room. “Your father didn't die. He faked his death. He used Volkov to build a shadow empire while pretending to be a ghost.”
Chloe shook her head violently, backing away from the table. “No. No, that’s impossible. We grew up poor! My mother worked three jobs before she died! We had nothing!”
“He kept you poor to keep you hidden,” Dominic deduced, his eyes narrowing as the final pieces of the puzzle clicked into place. “Volkov didn't want you because Tommy stole the drives. Volkov wanted you because you are the only biological heir to the Adams Syndicate. You are the key to the billions hidden in these offshore accounts.”
The room spun. Chloe felt the air leave her lungs. The life she thought she knew—the poverty, the double shifts, the struggle—was a carefully constructed lie designed to protect a criminal empire she didn't even know existed.
“I don't want it,” Chloe cried, panicked tears welling in her eyes. “I don't want any of this, Dominic! I just want to go back to my life! Burn the drives!”
Before Dominic could respond, the heavy steel door of the safehouse violently rattled.
The alarms didn't go off. The security cameras didn't show a breach. But the heavy locks on the door began to turn, one by one, clicking open with the precision of a master key.
Dominic immediately drew his pistol, stepping in front of Chloe, shielding her with his body.
The door slowly creaked open.
A tall, impeccably dressed man with silver hair and cold, gray eyes stepped into the safehouse. He wasn't flanked by armed guards. He didn't carry a weapon. He simply carried a silver-tipped walking cane.
He looked exactly like the faded photograph Chloe kept on her nightstand.
“Hello, Chloe,” Alexander Adams said, his voice smooth and devoid of any paternal warmth. He looked past his daughter, his cold eyes locking onto the mafia boss holding the gun. “Mr. Russo. I believe you are in possession of my property. And my daughter.”
Dominic didn't lower his weapon. He aimed it squarely at the chest of the ghost who had secretly ruled Boston for two decades.

“She isn't your property,” Dominic stated, pulling the hammer back. “And she isn't leaving with you.”
Alexander Adams smiled, a chilling, terrifying expression. “We will see about that, Dominic. The night is far from over.”
