Chapter 2 - The Standoff

|

The final note of the saxophone hung in the heavy, smoke-filled air of the Obsidian Club. Dominic smoothly released Chloe from the dance posture but kept his right hand firmly wrapped around her wrist. It wasn't a romantic gesture; it was a physical tether.

“Walk,” Dominic commanded, his voice a low, vibrating hum that demanded absolute obedience.

Chloe forced her trembling legs to move. They stepped off the mahogany dance floor, heading directly toward the velvet-roped VIP section. The three Volkov men moved instantly, cutting through the crowd to block their path. The leader, a massive man with a flattened nose and a thick wool coat, stepped directly in front of Dominic.

“Mr. Russo,” the Russian grunted, his heavy accent thick with false respect. “We do not wish to disrespect your establishment. We are only here to collect a girl. A personal matter for Mr. Volkov.”

Dominic did not stop walking until he was inches from the man’s chest. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't reach for a weapon.

“You are currently standing on my floor,” Dominic said, his dark eyes flat and devoid of mercy. “You are breathing my air. And you are looking at a woman who is currently under my protection. You have exactly three seconds to step aside, or my men will carry you out in garbage bags.”

The Russian sneered, dropping his hand into his heavy coat pocket. “Victor Volkov will not take this insult lightly, Russo. She belongs to us.”

“One,” Dominic counted, his voice echoing in the sudden silence of the club.

Behind the Russian men, the shadows of the club seemed to come alive. Six of Dominic’s security guards, dressed in immaculate black suits, stepped out from the pillars. The synchronized, metallic click of automatic weapons being chambered echoed over the soft jazz music.

The Volkov men froze. The numbers were drastically out of their favor.

“Two,” Dominic whispered, a cold, terrifying smile touching his lips.

The leader swallowed hard, his eyes darting to the armed men flanking him. He slowly pulled his empty hand out of his pocket and took a deliberate step backward, clearing the path.

“Victor will hear of this,” the man spat.

“Tell Victor I look forward to his call,” Dominic replied smoothly. He didn't look back at them as he pulled Chloe past the velvet rope and toward the glowing gold doors of the private elevator.

As the doors slid shut, sealing them inside the mirrored box, Chloe collapsed against the back wall, gasping for air as if she had been underwater. She looked at Dominic, who was straightening his cuffs as if nothing had happened. She realized with horrifying clarity that she hadn't just escaped a monster; she had been claimed by a bigger one.
