Chapter 9 - The Frozen Assets

|

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Mara filed massive, emergency legal protections around all of Natalie’s trust accounts. We meticulously documented every single fraudulent transfer. We formally notified the trust advisory board of the impending breach. We contacted the major bank that had approved the Wexford credit line and provided irrefutable evidence that Cole had grossly misrepresented the trust’s role in his financing.

At sunrise on the very morning of the baby shower, the Hartwell Family Stewardship Trust formally and legally withdrew its discretionary guarantee from Wexford Holdings.

Every single lender received official notice. Every pending corporate draw request was instantly frozen. Every account that depended heavily on Hartwell backing became immediately subject to intensive review.

Lucinda did not know. Cole did not know.

They were both too busy frantically arranging expensive balloons and commanding the hotel staff.

By the time I entered the ballroom that afternoon, their massive financial fortune was already collapsing quietly, inevitably, right behind the walls of their own arrogant celebration.

I firmly helped Natalie stand beside me on the wet carpet. She was shaking visibly, but she did not try to pull away from my grip. That mattered immensely.

For months, she had been systematically taught to make herself as small as possible whenever someone else in the room became angry. She had learned to apologize profusely before she even knew what she was apologizing for. But now, she stood in front of two hundred wealthy people, her dress stained, her hair loose, and her eyes full of tears, and she didn't shrink away.

Lucinda stared at us from the white sofa, her mouth set in a hard line.

"You are making an absolute spectacle of yourself, Evelyn," she sneered.

"No," I replied calmly. "You did that the exact moment you put my pregnant daughter on the floor."

Cole moved closer, attempting to de-escalate. "Evelyn," he said, dramatically lowering his voice. "Let us just take Natalie to the private suite upstairs. She desperately needs rest. We can talk about this privately."

Natalie flinched violently at the suggestion. It was a small movement. Most people in the room would not have noticed. But I did.

So did Mara Chen, who had just entered through the heavy ballroom doors with two prominent members of the trust advisory board walking closely behind her.

Cole saw them enter. His charming face changed instantly, panic finally setting in.
