Chapter 10 - Taking the Stage

"What is she doing here?" Cole demanded, pointing at Mara.
"She is here protecting my daughter," I said.
Lucinda stood up abruptly, dropping a baby outfit onto the pile of gifts. "You invited corporate lawyers to a baby shower? Have you lost your mind?"
"No," I said, my voice carrying across the silent room. "You invited them the moment you decided to use my granddaughter’s future as your own personal bank account."
The massive room had grown incredibly quiet. The string quartet had abruptly stopped playing mid-song. The hired DJ looked nervously toward the stage, unsure of what to do.
I walked purposefully past the extravagant gift table, past the categorized piles Lucinda had greedily created, past the unopened boxes and the torn, expensive wrapping paper. I stepped up onto the raised stage and firmly took the microphone directly from the DJ’s hand.
Lucinda’s voice sharpened into a shrill command. "Evelyn, put that down. Do not embarrass yourself and this family."
I looked down at her from the stage. Then at Cole. Then at the sea of people they had invited specifically to admire their wealth.
"You have spent months trying to convince everyone in this room that Natalie is entirely dependent on you," I spoke clearly into the microphone. "You have loudly told people she is fragile, overly emotional, impractical, and completely incapable of managing money. You have treated her pregnancy not as a blessing, but like an opportunity to take absolute control of her life."
Cole stepped forward aggressively. "Turn that microphone off right now!"
The DJ did not move. Mara Chen did not move. Neither did I.
"I found the hidden financial transfers," I continued relentlessly. "Seventy-two thousand dollars moved illegally from Natalie’s private savings account into a shell consulting company controlled entirely by Lucinda Wexford. I found the forged paperwork that attempted to fraudulently extend Cole Wexford’s access to the Hartwell trust funds. I found the horrific draft agreement that would have taken complete control of Natalie’s finances immediately after she gave birth."
A collective, loud gasp moved through the ballroom.
Lucinda’s face went chalk white. Cole turned and looked desperately at Natalie.
"Natalie, please, this is not what it looks like," he pleaded.
May you like
She just stared at him, her eyes finally clearing.
"It is exactly what it looks like," I said.
