Chapter 18 - Elara Arrives

|

My granddaughter was born on a dreary, rainy October morning.

The hospital delivery room was quiet, filled only with the rhythmic sound of the fetal monitor, the soft patter of rain against the large windows, and Natalie’s deep, focused breathing as she bravely worked through each intense contraction. I stayed right beside her, holding her hand. Mara came later, bringing a bag of snacks and a thick stack of legal documents that no one touched that entire day. Camille brought a beautiful bouquet of wild flowers. Natalie’s best friend, Rina, brought the handmade moon mobile that Lucinda had tried to steal.

When the baby finally arrived, she came into the world crying loudly, announcing her presence with furious energy.

Natalie laughed through her exhausted tears as they laid the baby on her chest.

"She has a very strong voice," Natalie whispered, stroking the dark hair.

"Yes," I agreed, wiping my own eyes. "She certainly does."

Natalie named her Elara. The name meant 'bright star.'

She held the baby tightly against her chest for a very long time, staring in awe at her tiny fingers, her dark hair, and her impossibly serious, perfect little face.

Then, Natalie looked up at me, a flicker of worry in her eyes. "Do you think she will ever remember any of this? The trial, the fear?"

"No," I said softly, smoothing the blanket over them. "But she will grow up entirely inside what you courageously chose to build after it."

Natalie nodded, accepting the truth. Children did not need perfect, fairytale stories. They simply needed safe ones.

Cole was officially notified of the birth through his attorney. He sent a generic, store-bought congratulations card. Natalie read it exactly once, then placed it in a memory box in the closet.

"Maybe one day she can decide for herself if she wants to know him," Natalie said, closing the box.

"That is her right," I agreed.

Lucinda sent absolutely nothing. For a while, I thought that was simply because she did not care. Later, I learned through the grapevine that it was because she was entirely too busy frantically trying to save the last, crumbling pieces of the life she had built entirely around appearances.

But those appearances could not hold her up anymore. The Wexford Foundation was permanently dissolved by the state. The luxury apartment was sold to cover debts. The family estate was placed under strict creditor review. And the wealthy people who had once laughed politely while Natalie scrubbed a carpet began actively distancing themselves from Lucinda, pretending as if they had never even known her.

They had known her. They simply chose not to see the monster until it was exposed.
