Chapter 5 - The Tell-Tale Relief

|

I sat across the kitchen island, staring at the man I had vowed to spend my life with, and decided to test his performance. I needed to see just how deep the sociopathy ran.

“Julian,” I said, keeping my voice soft and vulnerable. “Do you truly have to miss Christmas? It’s the very first year Harrison is actually old enough to understand what Santa Claus is. He’s been talking about opening presents with you all month. Can’t one of the junior partners handle the initial meetings?”

Julian reached across the marble counter and took my hand, his thumb tracing my knuckles. He didn't look guilty. He looked profoundly, expertly hurt that I would even question his dedication to our family.

“You think I want to be in a boardroom in Japan while my son opens his gifts?” Julian asked, his voice cracking perfectly. “It’s killing me, Claire. But this promotion secures Harrison’s college fund. I’m doing this for us. For our future.”

I let the silence hang in the air for a long, agonizing moment. I looked into his eyes, searching for a flicker of the man I used to know. I found nothing but a polished void.

“Okay,” I finally said, withdrawing my hand and offering a resigned nod. “If you have to go, you have to go.”

The moment I stopped questioning his narrative, the moment I verbally surrendered to his lie, I saw it. A microscopic, fleeting flicker of sheer relief crossed his face. It was there and gone in a fraction of a second, but that tiny, involuntary relaxation of his facial muscles told me infinitely more than any tearful confession ever could have. He thought he had won. He thought he had successfully secured his romantic getaway.
