Chapter 11 - The Aspen Wardrobe

|

Christmas Eve night was a masterclass in silent suffering. I lay rigid on the far edge of our king-sized bed, listening to the steady, rhythmic breathing of the man who was actively destroying our family. Julian slept deeply, completely unburdened by guilt, dreaming of his imminent escape. I didn't sleep a single minute. I watched the digital clock on the nightstand slowly tick toward dawn, counting down the hours until my liberation.

Christmas morning arrived bright, freezing cold, and painfully, insultingly ordinary.

Julian woke up early and dressed with a level of meticulous care that no man should ever exhibit for a supposedly grueling, fourteen-hour emergency business flight to Asia. He didn't put on a comfortable travel tracksuit or a standard corporate suit. Instead, he emerged from the walk-in closet wearing a thick, luxurious cashmere sweater, perfectly tailored dark denim, and expensive, polished leather boots meant for navigating snowy resort towns, not navigating the Tokyo subway system.

And then, the final insult: the cologne. He sprayed a heavy dose of the musky, intoxicating scent he had recently revived. It filled the hallway, a suffocating cloud of his impending infidelity.

“You look nice,” I managed to choke out, standing in the doorway of the kitchen with my coffee mug.

“First class upgrade,” Julian lied smoothly, adjusting his expensive watch. “Might as well look presentable for the executives when I land. Have to keep up appearances, right?”

“Right,” I replied, my voice devoid of all inflection. “Appearances are everything.”

He didn't catch the double meaning. He was too busy checking his reflection in the hallway mirror, admiring the man he thought he was getting away with being.
