Chapter 18 - The Unopened Gift

|
Before I walked out the front door, my eyes caught a glint of silver wrapping paper beneath the lower branches of the Christmas tree.
It was the expensive Christmas gift Julian had left for me. He had placed it there with a grand, theatrical flourish three days ago, telling me I wasn't allowed to open it until he returned from Japan.
"It’s something you’ve been wanting for a long time, Claire," he had smiled, kissing my cheek.
I slowly walked over to the tree and stared down at the silver box adorned with a massive, perfect red velvet bow. I didn't touch it. I didn't shake it. I didn't feel a single ounce of curiosity about what lay inside the expensive wrapping.
It could be diamond earrings. It could be the keys to a new car. It could be a necklace designed to ease his guilty conscience.

I looked at that gift and finally, profoundly understood that whatever was inside that box could not change the ugly, irreversible truth waiting outside the wrapping paper. A diamond cannot un-send a text message to a mistress. A necklace cannot un-lie to a two-year-old child on Christmas morning. The gift was just another beautifully packaged lie, designed to keep me compliant and blind.
I left the silver box sitting exactly where it was. It belonged in the museum of Julian. It was the perfect centerpiece for the empty, hollow life he had actively chosen to prioritize over his family. I turned my back on the tree and walked away.
