Chapter 23 - The False Alarm

|

At thirty-two weeks, panic struck the farmhouse without warning.

It was two in the morning. A freezing rain was lashing against the windows. Grace woke up with a sharp, agonizing cramp in her lower abdomen that stole her breath.

She gasped, clutching her stomach.

Nathan was awake instantly. He threw off the covers, turning on the bedside lamp.

“Grace? What is it? Is it time?”

“It’s too early,” she panicked, tears of real terror springing to her eyes. “It hurts, Nathan. It hurts really bad.”

Nathan didn’t waste a single second. He grabbed his keys, threw a heavy coat over Grace’s shoulders, and carried her out to the truck. He called Melissa on speakerphone while backing out of the driveway, asking her to come stay with the sleeping Lily.

The drive to the hospital was a blur of slick roads and white-knuckled terror. Grace squeezed Nathan’s hand so hard her fingernails dug into his skin, but he didn’t flinch.

“Breathe, Grace. We’re almost there. Just breathe,” he kept repeating, though his own voice was shaking.

He remembered the stories she had told him about Lily’s birth—how she had driven herself to a free clinic, terrified and entirely alone, while William Cole’s men were looking for her.

Not this time, Nathan swore to himself. She is not alone this time.

When they rushed into the emergency room, nurses immediately put Grace in a wheelchair and took her back to triage. Nathan stayed right beside her, refusing to let go of her hand.

After thirty agonizing minutes on the fetal monitor, the attending doctor finally walked in with a reassuring smile.

“The baby’s heartbeat is strong and steady,” the doctor said. “You aren’t in labor, Grace. You have a severe case of Braxton Hicks contractions, likely brought on by dehydration and overworking yourself. You need to rest, drink water, and stay off your feet.”

The relief that washed over the room was palpable.

Grace collapsed back into the hospital pillows, covering her face as she sobbed in relief. Nathan rested his forehead against her arm, taking the first full breath he had taken in an hour.

“I thought we were losing him,” Grace cried softly.

“He’s fine. You’re fine,” Nathan whispered, kissing her damp forehead. “I’ve got you. I’m right here.”
