Chapter 14 - Boundaries Drawn in Ink

The next morning, Daniel sat across from Nathan in the small conference room of their community studio. The unread letter from Victoria lay on the table between them.
Daniel looked older, the sharp edges of his corporate persona ground down by the reality of his diminished status and the weight of his past complicity.
“I can have our compliance attorney send the formal rejection to her probation officer today,” Daniel said quietly.
“Do it,” Nathan said. “Make it unequivocally clear that Grace and Lily are completely off-limits. No apologies, no closure, no contact. Her recovery is her own problem, not ours.”
Daniel nodded, sliding the envelope into his leather folio. He hesitated for a moment.
“For what it’s worth, Nathan… I think Grace is making the right choice. Victoria’s apologies were always just another form of manipulation. Even if a therapist is making her write it, it’s not about Grace. It’s about Victoria wanting to feel better about herself.”
Nathan looked at his brother. It was a rare moment of genuine insight from Daniel.
“Grace is protecting her peace,” Nathan said.
“She has every right to,” Daniel replied. He looked down at his hands. “I heard the Open Door Project is at full capacity already.”
“It is. We have a waiting list.”
“If you need help with the municipal zoning permits for the next property, my compliance work gives me access to the expedited filing system. I could save you a few weeks of red tape.”
Nathan studied him. Daniel wasn’t asking for credit or a title. He was just offering to do the invisible, tedious work.
“I’ll let you know,” Nathan said.

It wasn’t a thank you, but it wasn’t a rejection either. It was a boundary, drawn in ink, allowing just enough space for eventual trust to grow.
When Nathan got home that evening, Grace was in the garden with Lily, planting winter bulbs. The shadow of the letter was gone from her eyes. She had chosen her present over Victoria’s past.
