Chapter 2 - The Sound of Sirens

The sirens grew louder, howling down the long, private drive leading to the church. Panic finally cracked Victoria’s impenetrable mask.
She turned sharply, her eyes darting toward the side exit near the sacristy.
"I need to leave," Victoria announced, her voice pitching into a frantic, commanding tone. "Trevor, move these people out of my way."
Trevor stood frozen, his eyes darting between the small white coffins and the woman who had brought him into the world. He was a man entirely shattered by the realization that his mother was the architect of his destruction.
"I said move!" Victoria shrieked, grabbing Trevor’s shoulder and attempting to shove him aside.
"No," Trevor whispered.
It was the first time in his entire life he had denied her. But it was far too late to save my sons.
The main doors of the church burst open. Four uniformed police officers, accompanied by two plainclothes detectives, strode down the aisle. The congregation scrambled backward, pressing themselves against the wooden pews to clear a path.
"Victoria Whitmore?" the lead detective asked, his hand resting on his utility belt.
"This is a private funeral!" Victoria snapped, drawing herself up to her full height, attempting to wield her wealth like a shield. "You have absolutely no jurisdiction to interrupt my family's grief!"
"We have a warrant for your arrest, Mrs. Whitmore," the detective said, his voice entirely devoid of deference. "In connection with the deaths of Noah and Caleb Whitmore. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
"You cannot do this to me! I am a Whitmore!" she screamed, thrashing wildly as an officer grabbed her wrist.

The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed over the sobbing of the guests. As the officers turned her around to march her down the aisle, Victoria’s eyes locked onto mine. There was no remorse. There was only a cold, calculating promise of vengeance.
I didn't look away. I covered Emma’s ears and stared back at the devil until she was dragged out into the cold rain.
