Chapter 17 - The Bait

|

At 11:45 PM, the headlights of three massive, black SUVs cut through the swirling blizzard outside the estate windows.

They didn't bother with stealth. The heavy front doors of the mansion were kicked open with a concussive crash. The sound of heavy tactical boots echoed down the grand hallway, accompanied by the low, harsh voices of men speaking rapidly in Russian.

I remained perfectly still in the dark study, watching the doorway.

A flashlight beam swept into the room, illuminating the lockbox on the desk.

"She's here," a voice called out in English.

Three heavily armed men stepped into the study, their weapons raised. They were followed by a tall, impeccably dressed older man wearing a heavy cashmere overcoat. He exuded absolute, terrifying authority. The head of the Sokolov syndicate.

"Turn on the lights," the boss commanded.

One of the thugs found the switch. The backup generator roared to life in the basement, flooding the study with harsh, yellow light.

They saw me sitting in the corner, my hands resting in my lap. I did not flinch.

"Mrs. Whitmore," the boss said smoothly, stepping toward the desk. He didn't look at the gun resting on my lap; he didn't view me as a threat. "You are a very brave woman to invite us here on a holiday."

"I wanted to return your property, Mr. Sokolov," I replied, gesturing to the lockbox.

He smiled, reaching out to open the box. He quickly inspected the bearer bonds and flipped through the first ledger, verifying the encryption keys. He nodded in satisfaction to his men.

"You have saved us a great deal of trouble, Claire," Sokolov said, closing the box. "However, you have seen our internal accounts. You are a loose end. Why shouldn't I order my men to shoot you right now?"

"Because," I said, "I have an offer that will save your organization from a massive federal indictment."

Before I could explain, the sound of a violent scuffle echoed in the hallway.
