Chapter 15 - The Ultimatum

"What do you want, Claire?" Victoria asked, narrowing her eyes. "You have the money. You can disappear. Go to Europe. Take the child and run. I will gladly sign over whatever legitimate assets you want."
"I don't want your money," I stated. "I want you to suffer."
"You hold the ledgers," Victoria pointed out nervously. "If the Sokolovs don't get them back, they will use their influence inside this prison to have me shanked in the cafeteria before the trial even begins. You control my life right now."
"I am entirely aware of that," I smiled.
"Please," she begged, the word tasting like ash in her aristocratic mouth. "Claire, don't hand the ledgers over to them. Let my lawyers handle the transfer. I will give you full custody. I will give you the entire estate. Just don't let the Russians kill me."
I looked at the woman who had slapped me over the coffins of my murdered children. I remembered the cold, callous way she told me they were better off in heaven.
"I am going to arrange a meeting with the Sokolovs," I informed her, my voice devoid of any mercy. "And I am going to tell them exactly why their money is currently frozen in offshore accounts. I am going to tell them that you brought the police to your own doorstep by murdering two infants. They are going to be very disappointed in your lack of professionalism, Victoria."
"Claire, NO!" Victoria screamed, slamming her hands against the glass as I stood up from the chair. "They will torture me! They will butcher me!"

"God has His reasons," I quoted her own sickening words back to her.
I hung up the heavy black phone, turned my back on her screams, and walked out of the prison. The execution was set. Now, I just had to survive the wolves.
