Chapter 20 - Whispering Shadows|

The evening sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long, golden shadows across the stone patio of Audrey’s coastal home. David had stepped inside to answer a phone call from his university department, leaving Audrey alone with the quiet rustle of the wind.

Her phone buzzed on the glass table.

It was a text from Malcolm Reed, now retired from the board of Aurelia Systems.

Audrey, check your secure email. Something strange is happening with Northstar’s public share float.

Audrey frowned. She opened her laptop and logged into the encrypted investor portal.

Over the last forty-eight hours, an undisclosed offshore entity operating through a broker in Geneva had quietly bought up a massive block of non-voting shares in Northstar Holdings—nearly twelve percent of the available market volume.

It was an aggressive, coordinated accumulation pattern.

Her phone began to ring. The screen displayed an unknown international caller ID from Switzerland.

Audrey hesitated for a moment, then tapped the green answer icon and brought the phone to her ear.

“Hello?” Audrey spoke into the receiver, her voice steady and controlled.

Silence stretched over the line for three long seconds. Through the receiver, Audrey could hear the distinct, faint click of an encrypted line connection, followed by the quiet background noise of a rainy street.

Then, a deep, unfamiliar voice spoke—not Julian's, nor anyone she recognized from her past.

“Good evening, Ms. Vance,” the man said in a smooth, heavily accented European tone. “Congratulations on your recent marriage.”

Audrey’s eyes narrowed as she stood up from her chair, looking out toward the dark ocean.

“Who is this?” she demanded flatly.

“A friend who appreciates good strategy,” the voice replied smoothly. “Your late mother made a very specific agreement thirty years ago regarding Northstar’s initial seed capital—an agreement that was set to mature the moment you turned forty.”

Audrey’s breath hitched slightly in her chest. Her fortieth birthday was next week.

“My mother’s trust was fully audited and settled,” Audrey asserted, her voice dropping into cold authority.

“The public records say so, yes,” the man chuckled softly. “But the original founding charter wasn't signed in Boston, Ms. Vance. It was signed in Zurich. And the remaining forty-two percent of Northstar stock... is coming up for auction tomorrow morning.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Audrey stood frozen on the balcony, the phone still pressed to her ear, watching the dark waves crash against the rocks below as a cold wind swept in from the sea.
